It is now building one of the world's largest manufacturing ecosystems for green and clean energy, covering solar, batteries, hydrogen, and said the technology landscape is changing at an exponential speed and the key challenge for the next generation will be succeeding in this new order."Businesses of the future will have to be good at harnessing technologies of the future. So, our North Star has always been that our vision and purpose of doing business have to be impact-led," he said. "That's in the DNA of Reliance. We will figure out where to get to, what we want to do - as long as we have the right talent and we have the right goal."The goal, even at the beginning of Reliance's journey over four decades ago, was to contribute to making India a prosperous nation and enabling all Indians to live a better life. "Between my father and I, as owner-leaders, we believed in this goal and we built a team that also believed in it and executed it with equal zeal."That focus on the North Star, on achieving continuous growth through excellence, and creating large-scale societal impact remains unchanged in Reliance."What changes is our business strategy. Even today, we reinvent our business every three, four, or five years in terms of what we do," he said the ambition for deep-tech began with the telecom foray, when Jio launched 5G in 2021, building every aspect of the service within the company. "We built everything ourselves, end to end-the core, the hardware, the software, every single piece. We used Ericsson and Nokia to help us on 20 per cent, just to make sure that the 80 per cent that we put in was good," he desire to develop technology stemmed from the era when the landscape was subjected to a lot of licenses for the technology. "When we grew up, we were the users of technology, and it was clear that we had to license technology from abroad to ensure high quality. But we were subjugated to so many licenses. It was also high risk because, at the end of the day, if a plan didn't work, you could lose your shirt," he encouraged his leadership to be 'owners of technology' to become innovators."The change now for Reliance is that we are going to be a deep-tech and advanced manufacturing company," he has set its purpose in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) game by choosing to develop things that are 'downstream' and avoid the high-risk GPU game, he said. "Our big purpose is to solve the complex problems before society and create wealth for the nation and the people. For this, we need not go into the high-risk GPU game. Let's do everything downstream."Asked about what is the guiding light or 'North Star' for Reliance, Ambani said, "I am very loyal to my father's vision... Our North Star has always been that our vision and purpose of doing business have to be impact-led. My father used to say that if you want to start a business to be a billionaire, you are an idiot; you will never get there. If you want to start a business to impact a billion people, then you have a good chance of success, and, as a byproduct, you can make a reasonable amount of money."He also further shared his aim for longevity of Reliance and leaving behind a legacy through the company. "We are believers that, at the end of the day, you come without anything into this world, and you leave without taking anything with you. What you leave behind is an institution."Recalling his father's words, he said: "Reliance is a process. It's an institution that should last. You have to make sure that Reliance lasts beyond you and me.""That's my commitment to him - that Reliance will last beyond us. In 2027, Reliance will celebrate its golden jubilee. But I want Reliance to continue to serve India and humanity even after completing 100 years. And I am confident it will," he how he gets the 'right people' for his company and vision, Ambani said that the focus is on three Cs - character, competence and is more important than competence because competence can be built.

While Reliance did partner with companies like Ericsson and Nokia for some parts, Ambani made it clear that about 80 per cent of the technology was made in India by his own team. He added that he wanted his team to stay grounded and focused. 'I told them, 'You have to be better than the best out there.' And now, we are. That's why we can now offer unique services, because the technology is completely our own,' he explained. Focus on innovation Mukesh Ambani's focus on innovation doesn't stop at telecom but it runs through all of Reliance's businesses. He shared how having a strong purpose drives both technology and people, especially in the fast-growing world of artificial intelligence (AI). Ambani pointed out that skilled people in AI, like those working on OpenAI, often move between companies. 'It's the same group of 500 experts,' he said. 'Today they might work for you, and tomorrow for someone else. But if your company has a clear and meaningful purpose, they will choose to work with you.' Reliance's focus on AI He explained that Reliance's goal with AI is to tackle tough social challenges and help build the nation's wealth, not just chase high-end computing power like GPUs. 'Our purpose in AI is to solve big problems facing society. We don't need to take huge risks on expensive tech. We'll focus on smart, practical work that makes an impact,' Ambani said. Because of this clear vision, Reliance has been able to attract top talent people who are inspired by the bigger mission. Ambani's message is that strong leadership comes from having a clear purpose, using technology wisely, and motivating teams to aim high. 'If your goal is clear and you know how to use tech, you'll find your way,' he said. 'AI is our future, not a side bet', says Ambani on Reliance's next big leap
Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, said the company is entering a new phase of growth powered by artificial intelligence and deep technology, calling it the group's next major leap after telecom and energy. In a conversation with Gautam Kumra of McKinsey & Company for its Leading Asia series, Ambani laid out a future vision where Reliance becomes a deep-tech and advanced manufacturing powerhouse. 'The change now for Reliance is that we are going to be a deep-tech and advanced manufacturing company,' he said. Ambani also revealed that the company has already built its 5G infrastructure completely in-house. 'We built everything ourselves, end to end—the core, the hardware, the software, every single piece,' he said, adding that Reliance used Ericsson and Nokia for just 20 per cent of the system to benchmark against global players. 'I said to them, 'You have to be better than these guys.' And we are now.' On artificial intelligence, Ambani made it clear that Reliance will stay away from high-risk capital-heavy areas like GPUs, instead focus on downstream applications that align with national needs. 'Within the AI field, we have created our purpose by saying, 'Our big purpose is to solve the complex problems before society and create wealth for the nation and the people. For this, we need not go into the high-risk GPU game. Let's do everything downstream'.' This focus, he said, is helping the company attract top-tier global talent. 'What people don't realise is that when you make OpenAI or other [artificial] intelligence, the same 500 people will work on it. Today they work for you, and after tomorrow, they work for someone else. They also have a purpose, and they say, 'As long as we align with the company's big purpose, we'll come to work for you.' We are doing that continually now.' Purpose, not profit, has long driven the Reliance model, Ambani noted. 'If you are clear about your goal, and you know how to use technology, then you will achieve your North Star,' he said. He also reiterated Reliance's philosophy of continuous reinvention. 'That focus on the North Star, on achieving continuous growth through excellence, and creating large-scale societal impact remains unchanged in Reliance. What changes is our business strategy. Even today, we reinvent our business every three, four, or five years in terms of what we do.' Asked what drives the birth of a new business within the group, Ambani responded, 'What is the most critical need for India's development, and how can we fulfil it at scale and over a long arc of time?' Tracing the Reliance journey from textiles to telecom and now clean energy and tech, Ambani said, 'We also have no hesitation in believing we can build businesses of the future. With our experience, we can extrapolate the future 20 years from today.' Ambani further shared a long-term institutional vision, rooted in the legacy of his father, Dhirubhai Ambani. 'My father said to me, 'Reliance is a process. It's an institution that should last. You have to make sure that Reliance lasts beyond you and me.' That's my commitment to him—that Reliance will last beyond us.'
