Liverpool release emotional video paying tribute to retiring Ireland legend
Leanne Kiernan Ireland striker has led the tributes to club and country pal Niamh Fahey in an emotional video released by Liverpool in honour of the retiring defender. Fahey announced in early May that she was hanging up her boots at club level, five months after retiring from international football. The 37-year-old, capped 114 times by Ireland, had been with the Reds since 2018 and in the 2021/22 season she captained the club to promotion to the Women's Super League. A former Galway Gaelic footballer, Fahey began her senior Ireland career in 2007. She also played for Salthill Devon, Arsenal, Chelsea, French side Bordeaux during a glittering career that saw her win three WSL titles and five FA Cups, among other honours. The video released by Liverpool on their Instagram account is packed with tributes from current and former teammates, including Girls in Green star Kiernan. She said: 'What a career, what a person. I tell you my four years here in this club would not be the same without you. It's just, it's quite sad, because I haven't known Liverpool without you. I have learned so much off you, good things and bad, I guess. 'You've made the game such a better place, both with Ireland and with Liverpool. Your morals, what you stand for on and off the pitch, I think it's brilliant. For every wee girl out there you are the prime example of what we need looking up to. 'I love you forever and I'll miss you for sure, but memories can't be taken away. That was the best four years of my life here in Liverpool and I feel like I wouldn't be saying that without you, so thank you for everything.'
