I covered Liverpool trophy celebrations for TV – having to pretend was terrible
Lee Dixon has recounted how there was very little atmosphere as Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy at the end of the 2019/20 season due to unfortunate limitations from the Covid-19 pandemic Lee Dixon has recalled how he had to try to create an atmosphere as Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy back in the 2019/20 season. Under Jurgen Klopp, the Reds secured their first-ever title since the league's foundation in 1992, however, celebrations were cruelly cut short due to the global coronavirus pandemic. Dixon was at Anfield for the trophy presentation in July 2020, which was held behind closed doors due to social distancing measures. And speaking on David Seaman 's Seaman Says podcast, on behalf of Betway, he explained: "The last time they won it, I was there doing the presentation during Covid with no fans there. "They set the press up on the halfway line and they were on the Kop getting the [trophy]. "We were all waiting for the interviews and me and Graham Le Saux, working for NBC, were standing there with these mics. And I said, 'We're gonna have to make an atmosphere here.' "So, we're all trying to pretend there were fans there and do different voices. It was terrible. But you know, they deserve an Anfield reception. They certainly do." As a result of the pandemic, the 2019/20 season was halted on March 13, 2020, and wasn't picked back up until June 17 – with the season being extended until July 26. However, upon the resumption of the season, the last nine games of the season were played behind closed doors to prevent the spread of Covid-19. This meant that fans were unable to see Liverpool lift the trophy in the flesh. Writing in his autobiography on the eerie experience at the time, club captain Jordan Henderson said: "I wanted the fans to be there and I felt cheated for them but I felt cheated myself, too. "The experience of winning this prize that the club had been chasing for so long wasn't going to be the same without them. I had to keep reminding myself how lucky we were just to be playing at all. "You've got people dying, people stuck in the house for months on end and I'm disappointed because the fans aren't there and the atmosphere isn't better? Come on. "You feel bad for thinking that. But Liverpool fans are obsessed with football and they had waited 30 years to win a league title and for them not to be able to be there to share it with the players was hard. It was hard for the players and the fans because it meant so much." Despite lockdown measures suggesting that people stayed at home whenever possible, thousands of Liverpool fans flocked to Anfield to celebrate a 19th top flight title with one another on the evening that Liverpool were crowned champions – following Chelsea's 2-1 win over Manchester City on June 25. However, the Reds finally got a real party after five years in the making at Anfield on Sunday following their final game of the 2024/25 season with Crystal Palace, which was broadcast live on Sky Sports. Liverpool wrapped up the 2024/25 Premier League title with four games to spare thanks to a 5-1 demolition of Tottenham on home soil last month, with their subsequent clashes with Chelsea, Arsenal, Brighton and Palace coming as all but a victory lap of the UK with no real pressure on results. The roars could practically be heard from miles as Arne Slot's side hoisted the Premier League trophy on Sunday in front of a jam-packed Anfield, somewhat making up for the lack of an official celebration last time around. Players and staff will also enjoy an open-top bus through the city on Monday, with hundreds of thousands of fans expected to line the route and cheer. The victory parade sets off from Allerton Maze at 2.30pm, before ending in Blundell Street. It is thought that the procession will last between three and five hours in total. Speaking on the celebrations, Liverpool City Council's cabinet member for culture and public health Councillor Harry Doyle said: "Bank Holiday Monday is set to be a day to remember for the whole city, and with an event of this scale, a bit of planning goes a long way. "That's why we've created a clear, easy FAQs, to make sure everyone has the key information they need to feel confident, stay safe, and enjoy the day in their own way." The Council has also asked people not to bring flares or to fly drones at the procession. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Mum slams 'disgusting' Scots teacher jailed for upskirting her daughter in class
Sleazy Maths teacher Lee Dixon was sent to prison for 19 months this week after being caught taking pictures of youngsters at a Lanarkshire high school. A horrified mum has slammed a ' disgusting' teacher who was jailed for upskirting her daughter in class. Sleazy Maths teacher Lee Dixon was sent to prison for 19 months this week after being caught taking pictures of youngsters. The 30-year-old, from Bellshill, was arrested after another pupil spotted his mobile phone camera pointing at the underwear of a girl from beneath his desk at a Lanarkshire high school. Airdrie Sheriff Court heard that Dixon earlier filmed a 12-year-old girl before secretly taking videos of the underwear of the 15-year-old girl on two occasions. The mum of the older victim - who cannot be identified for legal reasons - told the Record the incident had a serious impact on her daughter's wellbeing and her prospects at school, leaving her struggling with exams as she anxiously waited for the case to reach court. She said: 'I'm disgusted that a person in such a position of power and trust with young people could do this. 'The fact he was so blase in doing this makes me concerned as to how often this was happening. I don't think other parents were fully aware of what went on. We don't know how many children were a target for this man. Other children could have been photographed. 'I'm happy he has been given a custodial sentence but it should have been much longer and he should be on the sex offenders' register for life. 'This man should never be allowed to work around young people again.' Police were called to the school in March 2023 when a classmate of the girl spotted what Dixon was doing and incriminating footage was found on his phone. The teacher's career is now over after he pleaded guilty to voyeurism charges and was sentenced on Tuesday. The victim's mum recalled how she received a call telling her what had happened and rushed to the school. She said: 'It seems the classroom had been in a bit of chaos afterwards. 'My daughter had left and went to go and look for her support teacher and told them what happened and they pulled the other girls in. 'She passed Dixon in the corridor on the way back. 'I was able to get there quite quickly to be with her. 'My daughter was doing so well at school before this. She had a high attendance and was articulate but it has been a nightmare the last couple of years. 'It's been horrendous because it happened just before the National 5s and has impacted on her exams. 'I feel as thought she's not been able to reach her full potential at high school with all of this going on. 'She's had the police coming in and fiscal phoning and has been facing the potential of having to go to court for a trial. 'Thankfully that didn't need to happen. 'The school has been good and she did get some therapy but not everyone has been so supportive. 'She hasn't felt as comfortable at school since and is not as trusting of the teaching staff. It's had a big impact on her mental health and wellbeing. 'It bothers her that she still doesn't know what pictures were taken and where they are now.' It's understood Dixon had only taught at the school for a matter of months when the offences came to light. Defence lawyer John Kilcoyne said Dixon was 'disgusted' by his 'despicable' behaviour. The solicitor told the court: 'He appreciates this was a gross breach of trust and knows his career is over. 'He has recently gained an HGV licence and hopes to get work as a driver.' Mr Kilcoyne said Dixon's wife has left him following his conviction but his family in general remain 'very supportive'. Several of his relatives were in court for the hearing. The lawyer said Dixon acknowledged the effect his behaviour had on the pupils and was assessed by a social worker as at low risk of reoffending. He added: 'My client is apprehensive of a custodial sentence and asks that he be given the opportunity to engage with social workers.' But Sheriff Derek Livingston said he had no choice but to send him to prison. He told Dixon: 'The horror those girls must have felt when this was discovered can only be imagined. 'Parents gave you responsibility to look after their children and educate them. 'Instead, you abused your position of trust and engaged in this voyeuristic behaviour. 'Until this happened you appear to have been a model citizen, but that breach of trust was such that I consider there to be absolutely no alternative to a custodial sentence.' Dixon was placed on the sex offenders' register for 10 years. Scottish Ministers will be advised that he is deemed unsuitable to work with children and other vulnerable groups. Teacher, 30, who was caught filming up girls' skirts in the classroom is jailed and placed on the sex offenders' register
A 'despicable' maths teacher who took photos of young girls' underwear while they wore skirts in his classroom has been jailed for 19 months. Bangor football stadium's upgrade plan for lighting, dug outs and TV gantry
The Bangor City Football stadium - Stadiwm Dinas - looks set for some major improvements. Cyngor Gwynedd has received an application to upgrade floodlights, install new and relocate dugouts, and to move the existing TV gantry. The full application has been made by Lee Dixon (Nantporth CIC) through Gerwyn Jones (Outline Building Solutions Cyf). Formerly known as Stadiwm Nantporth, the site is located between the Southern banks of the Menai Strait and Ffordd Caergybi, near Bangor University's Normal Site. Plans describe "three main elements" to the work including: an upgrade of existing floodlights, installation of four new lighting columns to the main pitch, moving the existing min pitch TV gantry by approximately 2.5m, and the relocation and upgrade of the main pitch dugouts. The proposal explains that the existing floodlights were designed to provide a 500 lux level of light however, due to" deterioration of the current light fittings," the actual levels are now "slightly lower". Work will see lighting columns upgraded with "modern and more energy efficient " LED floodlights. Four new 18m tall lighting columns will be installed, one at each corner, 6-7m, away from the pitch 's corner flags. Get all the latest Gwynedd news by signing up to our newsletter - sent every Tuesday The additional four columns will allow light levels to increase to 800 lux - but only when needed for matches broadcast on TV. The plans say the new LED light fillings will be directed towards the pitch to "reduce light spill as much as possible." Plans also note that increasing lux levels could have "a slight impact on neighbouring areas," but they have been designed "so that light spill is minimal" and the light fittings focus towards the pitch. The plans say the floodlights would not be in constant use, and only used when required for football matches," and mainly "during the winter months. The centre line of the existing TV gantry is currently about 2.5m off centre of the halfway line of the main pitch. It will be dismantled, and rebuilt approx. 2.5m to the South West of its current position, to line up with the main pitch half way line. The existing dugouts (one per team) will move to the Menai side of the main pitch, and made slightly bigger The existing site is currently used for football matches throughout the Welsh footballing pyramid. The plans say matches on the main pitch are generally played on weekends, but there are some midweek matches. The 3G pitch is used during the weekends and midweek and during later kick-off times. During the Winter, the existing floodlights will be switched on for the matches on the main pitch. The main pitch is currently used by CPD Bangor 1876 FC and the 3G pitch is being used by several lower league teams, in addition to being rented out for recreational matches.
