Leela Chitnis won hearts with films that carried important social messages. Her career spanned from the 1930s to the 1980s, starting as a romantic lead and later becoming famous for playing strong, ideal mothers on screen. Early Life and Education Leela was born in September 1909 to a father who taught English literature. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, making her one of the first educated actresses in Indian cinema. After college, she joined a theatre group called Natyamanwantar, where her acting journey began. At just 15 or 16, Leela married Dr. Gajanan Yeshwant Chitnis in an arranged marriage. They had four children, but their marriage didn't last. Slowly but surely, she made a name for herself and even replaced Bombay Talkies' leading lady, Devika Rani. Her on-screen chemistry with Ashok Kumar was loved by audiences, with hits like Azad (1940), Bandhan (1940), and Jhoola (1941). Trailblazing Achievements and Iconic Roles In 1941, at the height of her fame, Leela became the first Indian actress to endorse a popular soap brand. She also played the role of Dilip Kumar 's mother in the film Shaheed. Later in her career, she became best known for playing memorable motherly roles that touched many hearts. Later Years and Legacy After many successful years in films, Leela retired from acting and moved to the United States in the late 1980s to be closer to her children. She passed away peacefully at the age of 94 in a nursing home in Danbury, Connecticut. After this, she wrote her autobiography in the Marathi language, which was named Chanderi Duniyat.
