Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Nick DeFazio said the SUV was in the ditch, with the driver trapped inside.
'Firefighters confirmed the patient was conscious and began stabilizing the vehicle before starting the extrication process,' DeFazio said in an email.
'Firefighters used specialized tools to remove both the front and rear driver's side doors and the roof prior to completing a dash lift to safely extricate the driver.'
The driver was transferred to the care of paramedics.
An Ottawa paramedic spokesperson tells CTV News Ottawa the driver was the only occupant of the vehicle. He was transported to hospital in critical condition.
