Award-winning Oregon newspaper closing after 115 years
PORTLAND, Ore, (KOIN) — One of the oldest newspapers in Oregon will be shuttering operations after 115 years.
The Malheur Enterprise, located in Vale, will close due to the retirement of the publication's owners Les Zaitz and wife, Scotta Callister.
The Enterprise made the announcement on its website Tuesday.
Zaitz and Callister have both been journalists in Oregon for over 50 years. The couple is retiring and says they couldn't find a successor to take over the publication.
'The Enterprise is a strong business and represents the very best in community journalism,' said Zaitz. 'With no successor in sight, it's time for us to step back from decades of journalism to a slower pace with a renewed (focus) on family and friends.'
'There's been a lot of talk about saving rural news operations – focused on funding, training programs, digital upgrades – but you still need someone to run them, someone with both a passion for community and an understanding of the news business,' Callister added. 'That's increasingly tough to find.'
The last print edition of the paper will be released Wednesday. The publication's online service will discontinue at the end of the month.
