Singer Joss Stone talks Grammys, career journey, and music's evolution ahead of Rochester show

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Coming soon to Rochester: Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter, Joss Stone! News 8's Natalie Kucko sat down with the artist before she takes the Temple Theater stage later this month to discuss Stone's journey in the music industry and what she has in store for the performance. 'Music has still very much been a part of my life. It's so different now than when I was younger in 2003. That's when my first record came out. It's a totally different life, you know,' said Stone. Stone's path to success was an early one. The singer was signed to a record label when she was only 14. She then produced her first record at 16 and went on to win her first Grammy awards not long after that with her sophomore album, 'Mind Body & Soul' in 2004. Stone is still making music now, in her late 30s. She has produced nearly 10 albums over the years and has performed all over the world, with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison, and Sting. '[NK]: To your fans who may be looking to see you after all these years, how have you stayed true to yourself and maintained your image in the industry? [JS]: When I hit about 18 or 19, I was like, 'I need to do what I like. I need to not be told what to sing, what to wear.' Things like that. I think you go through that little phase and I disliked that so, so much that I realized I had to not do that. So, it wasn't a long, drawn-out thing. I just decided to do my thing,' said Stone. Stone will take the last stop of her 'Less Is More: An Evening with Joss Stone' tour to Rochester on Feb. 26. She promises an intimate performance, along with the same raspy harmonies she's known for. Later this year, Stone will co-headline a U.S. tour with Melissa Etheridge and will release new music in the spring. 'When I sang with Melissa on the Grammys all those years ago, it was a moment because I had literally been listening to her since I was in the womb. Now, here we are, and we're going to do a co-headline. Like, I don't know how this happens,' she said. In the ever-changing genre of R&B, Stone says staying true to her soulful sound has been key. 'To me, R&B is soulful and it's something that moves your heart and spirit and tells a story. Soul music is so deep, and that's how I see it. But now, I don't know what it is now,' Stone laughed, 'But, I just carry on and do my 'do.' I don't know what to do, but I'm just going to carry on.' Joss Stone performs at the Temple Theater in downtown Rochester February 26. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be found here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
