Neil Young Takes Direct Aim at Tesla on New Single ‘Let's Roll Again'

Six days after previewing the song at the semi-annual Light Up The Blues charity show, Neil Young has officially released 'Let's Roll Again' from his upcoming LP Talkin' To the Trees, which arrives June 13. It may sound like a sequel to his 2002 September 11 song 'Let's Roll,' but it's actually a plea for auto manufacturers to act responsibly and create more electric vehicles. 'C'mon Ford, C'mon GM,' he sings. 'C'mon Chrysler, let's roll again/Build somethin' useful, people need/Build us a safe way for us to be/Build us somethin' won't kill our kids.' 'If yer a fascist/Then get a Tesla,' he sings. 'If it's electric, it doesn't matter.' (Two decades back, Young created his own electric vehicle, Lincvolt. The saga is chronicled on his 2009 LP Fork in the Road.) Talkin' To The Trees is Young's first album with his new band, the Chrome Hearts, which includes guitarist Micah Nelson, organist Spooner Oldham, bassist Corey McCormick, and drummer Anthony Logerfo. (The band is essentially Promise of the Real minus Lukas Nelson, with Oldham added in.) In January, Young shared the Talkin' To The Trees album cut 'Big Change.' Neil Young assembled the Chrome Hearts last year after unspecified health matters forced him to call off a tour with Crazy Horse last summer at the halfway point. They played their first show of the year at Light Up The Blues on April 26. The set included not just the live debut of 'Let's Roll Again,' but also the first performance of 'Ordinary People' since 1988. They recorded Talkin' To The Trees late last year at Shangri-La studios in Malibu, California, with producer Lou Adler. Young's longtime associate John Hanlon served as the engineer. 'In my humble opinion, this is shaping up to be a completely unique and soulfully introspective album of songs,' Hanlon wrote earlier this year on the Neil Young Archives, 'that run the gamut from a palette of beautiful acoustic style pastels to in-your-face loud, irreverent rock 'n roll paint splatter on the canvas in the vein of a Jackson Pollack painting.' Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts kick off a world tour June 18 at Dalhalla, Rättvik, Sweden. The U.S. leg begins August 8 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and wraps up September 15 in Los Angeles. Neil Young's Latest Single Uses F-Word for Tesla, Critiques Detroit Big Three

Neil Young, like many rockstars, is a gearhead. His book, 'Special Deluxe,' was an autobiographical look back at the 79-year-old folk rocker's life through his cars. At an age when many of his peers are slowing down, Young can still be spotted out and about cruising in his custom cars, such as his 'LincVolt' restomodded 1959 Lincoln Continental. He's also, not surprisingly, penned at least a half-dozen songs about cars. His latest, 'Lets Roll Again,' shows just how much Young is keeping up with the auto industry, and calls out GM, Ford, Stellantis, and Tesla in the wake of increased Chinese competition. Written to the tune of Woody Guthrie's 'This Land Is Your Land,' 'Let's Roll Again' starts out with shots fired at the Detroit Three. 'Come on Ford, c'mon GM, come on Chrysler, let's roll again,' the song starts, before continuing, 'Build something useful that people need, build us a safe way for us to be. Build us something that won't kill our kids, that runs real clean.' Young, who is a proponent of cleaner electrified cars, then spends a later verse detailing his wishlist for future product from Ford and GM, singing, 'Build us some small vans for city streets, and spend a clean day delivering. Don't want no loud sounds coming from the back, spewing a buncha poison—it's not a racetrack…' The song's chorus' discusses a story MotorTrend has been paying particularly close attention to: increased competition from China in the form of the country's electric cars. 'On down the highway from place to place, come on America let's get in the race. Now China's way ahead, they're building clean cars. Some days are like that, it doesn't matter. Some days are like that, so taste your freedom,' he sings. Young's final verse calls out Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk, the latter of which has been in the news lately for his outsized role in the Trump administration, singing 'If you're a fascist, then get a Tesla. If it's electric it doesn't matter. If you're a democrat than taste your freedom. Get whatever you want and taste your freedom.' You can listen to the song yourself below:

The collection of songs, titled 'Talkin' to Trees,' is due out June 13, and will be Young's first recorded set with new band Chrome Hearts. 'Talkin' to Trees' will include January single 'Big Change' and 'Lets Roll Again,' which was released Friday. The song was released alongside a music video that featured a 'Heil Tesla' image depicting Musk's controversial and alleged Nazi-style salute. Neil Young's Elon Musk-bashing track is now available to stream

Neil Young has released a studio version of his new politically charged tune 'Lets Roll Again,' announcing a new album that may feature similarly scathing tracks. The Grammy-winning musician debuted the tune last week at a benefit concert in Los Angeles, drawing attention for jabbing at Tesla founder Elon Musk with the line, 'If you're a fascist, get a Tesla/ It's electric, it doesn't matter.' The track, released Friday, May 2, marks Young's second officially released song with his new band the Chrome Hearts. Their first album together, the 10-track project 'Talkin to the Trees,' is due out June 13. A re-write of Woody Guthrie's 'This Land Is Your Land,' 'Lets Roll Again' also targets the American automotive industry, pleading with companies such as Ford and Chrysler to return to responsible manufacturing methods. Young, a former San Mateo County resident, has long voiced his political beliefs and has championed sustainable automotive technology for years. He launched Linc Volt Technology to promote retrofitting gas-powered vehicles with clean energy alternatives in 2008 and showed off a 1959 Lincoln Continental converted to run on electric batteries and a biodiesel generator at San Francisco's Dreamforce conference that same year. He has also adapted a Mercedes-Benz and a Hummer to run on used vegetable oil. After the album's launch, Young and the Chrome Hearts are set to hit the road for their ' Love Earth ' world tour, with plans to stop at Mountain View's Shoreline Amphitheatre on Sept. 12. Though he holds dual Canadian American citizenship, Young has been vocal about his concerns about reentering the country for his U.S. shows given the current political climate. 'When I go to play music in Europe, if I talk about Donald J. Trump, I may be one of those returning to America who is barred or put in jail to sleep on a cement floor with an aluminium blanket,' he wrote on his website last month. 'That's right folks, if you say anything bad about Trump or his administration, you may be barred from re-entering USA.' His wife, actress Darryl Hannah, noted that Trump's first administration 'tried every trick in the book' to prevent him from obtaining his American citizenship, but said that she thinks he's safe for now. She and Young just released a new black-and-white concert film called ' Neil Young: Coastal,' which was directed by Hannah and hit theaters April 1.
