A Texas politician was allegedly stabbed by her grandson Monday morning in an attack that killed her husband. Denton County Commissioner Bobbie Mitchell, who served as the first Black mayor of Lewisville, Texas, from 1993 to 2000, was hospitalized Monday morning and is in stable condition and being treated for stab wounds. Her husband, Fred Mitchell, was pronounced dead around 5 a.m. Mitchell Blake Reinacher, Bobbie and Fred Mitchell's 23-year-old grandson, was arrested and has been charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was still at the scene when police arrived and he was arrested without incident, police said. 'The crime scene remains active as [Lewisville police] crime scene investigators and detectives continue processing evidence and working to determine the circumstances that led to the attack,' a news release reads. Lewisville Mayor TJ Gilmore wrote on Facebook that Bobbie Mitchell underwent surgery and is expected to fully recover. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said in a statement that he and his wife are 'heartbroken' over Fred Mitchell's death. 'I thank the Lewisville Police Department and other first responders for their quick response and for rushing Commissioner Mitchell to the hospital,' Abbott said. 'Cecilia and I pray for Commissioner Mitchell as she recovers from her injuries and for Fred Mitchell's family and loved ones as they mourn his death.' Rachel Roberts, the Lewisville police public information officer, said in a statement reported by CBS News that the stabbing will have a 'profound impact' on Lewisville. 'The City of Lewisville stands united in rejecting violence and remains committed to justice, peace, and the safety of all who live and serve here,' Roberts said.
