'Disastrous' Suits LA spin-off is cancelled after just one season

Spin-off series Suits LA has been cancelled after the first season following poor reviews and low viewing figures. The legal drama series stars the likes of Stephen Amell, Lex Scott Davis, Josh McDermitt, Bryan Greenberg and even boasts Gabriel Macht's Harvey Specter for a three-episode arc. However, after the last of its 13 episodes will air on May 18, the new series will be no more. This comes after fans branded the NBC series a 'trainwreck' after it premiered in February. The season charts the story of Ted Black (Amell), a former federal prosecutor from New York, who has reinvented himself on the West Coast. Working at Black Lane, the law firm he and his criminal defense attorney friend launched more than 10 years ago, Ted has to navigate some of the most influential clients in Los Angeles. Airing on Sunday nights, the first season averaged a 0.17 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.49 million viewers, making it the network's second-lowest-rated series of the season. After the original Suits series starring Meghan Markle and Patrick J. Adams found popularity on Netflix during the pandemic, NBCUniversal attempted to jump on the back of this success with a new spin-off. However, with the show currently boasting a 39% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.4 on IMDb, the series was not a hit with fans. Responding to the news on X, @BestFrameFrwd said: 'Problem was, it felt like they wanted a show full of 'Harveys'. 'You need contrasts like Mike and Donna, and big character swings like Louis, to add depth to the roster and more potential for storylines.' @YoungbloodJoe added: 'Love Stehpen Amell but Episode 1 was a disaster and made me extremely uninterested in the rest. Original was brilliant for 2 seasons.' @michael_esq1 also commented: 'You can't have a spinoff without the main characters. It doesn't work.' After the pilot episode was released, fans were also less than happy. Ryan Q commented: 'What an absolute train wreck. As a massive Suits fan I cant believe how tragic this pilot was. 'Just ridiculous. Mr Korsh that was an embarrassment to your credibility and will stain your legacy. I can't believe how let down I am after that. I can't say even as an avid Suits fan I will bother to watch the 2nd episode [sic].' More Trending Flocking to Reddit, Salgatorium fumed: 'They are trying to be exactly like the original Suits and it is awful. The plot is already all over the place 15 minutes in. 'The music is cheesy. The character building is cheesy. This show is dead in the water.' Dadonred said: 'This is like a parody of a low budget spoof of the original. Horrible! Bad writing, bad acting, boring scenes. Ugh.' View More » Suits LA is available to watch on Peacock. Got a story? Can ‘Suits LA' recapture the charms of ‘Suits'?

'Suits LA,' as might be expected from its very clear title, moves the action from glossy high-rise offices in New York to glossy high-rise offices in LA. This time, the series focuses on Ted Black, an entertainment lawyer played by Stephen Amell, Ted runs a firm that focuses on both entertainment law and criminal defense alongside his longtime friend, Stu (Josh McDermitt). As the series begins, the duo is navigating a merger with another big firm. Meanwhile Ted is trying to decide who to make head of entertainment law: Rick (Bryan Greenberg), whose gentle manner could help him win cases, but could also indicate a lack of killer instinct; or Erica (Lex Scott Davis), who is all killer instinct. Lex Scott Davis as Erica Rollins in "Suits LA." David Astorga/NBC He and Rick are also quite friendly, a dynamic that suggests but never quite lands the idea that a good-old-boys network is preventing Erica, a Black woman, from succeeding at the firm. Amell is a charismatic performer, but in the early going Ted is a collection of traits more so than a character: arrogant, talented, concealing a deep inner pain, ambitious. Advertisement He's also a former federal prosecutor, constantly voicing the opinion that defense attorneys exist solely to keep bad guys out of prison. It plays very bizarrely in a country where miscarriages of justice are so well-known that even the most recent Marvel movie, 'Captain America: Brave New World,' featured a plotline about a man who was unjustly imprisoned for decades. Ted has reasons both professional and personal to dislike criminals, but it's a strangely one-note stance that he repeats far too often. We all have our bugaboos, but he brings it up so often that the opinion starts to feel unnaturally wedged in as a character detail. Should you watch it? Here's where I admit that I've only seen the pilot of the original 'Suits,' so it's hard for me to say if this one satisfies for similar reasons. As a standalone show, it did improve over the course of the first few episodes, though it's also spending too much time flashing back to 2010 to revisit a case that we can predict will propel Ted from federal prosecutor to entertainment lawyer. He also lacks a foil like Adams's Mike (so far), which ends up burdening him with too much of the emotional narrative. Still, if what you like is smart, well-dressed lawyers constantly one-upping each other, you'll find that here. USA's Blue Sky era was not wrong — there will always be an appetite for shows like this one, and it's a relief to watch a show not overburdened with a season-long mystery, or celebs hunting for an Emmy. 'Suits LA' star Lex Scott Davis on the 'huge responsibility' of her new role: 'I don't think there's an actor out there who didn't want to be a part of this show'

The latest spin-off of the record-shattering series Suits has a sunnier setting and a fresh cast of characters. Suits LA follows an entertainment law firm dealing with high-profile clients and interpersonal drama. Lex Scott Davis stars as Erica Rollins, an ambitious lawyer who works for Ted Black (Stephen Amell). He's a former federal prosecutor from New York taking on A-list clientele while coping with his dark past, and Rollins is striving to move up the corporate ladder as much as he is. 'She's so strong and such a powerhouse — very determined to fight for her clients, for Ted and what she thinks she deserves,' Davis told Yahoo Entertainment. 'The willpower that she had to make her presence known in a male-dominated space, I found really relatable.' Davis loves her character, but she was also excited to be a part of a franchise as popular as Suits. The original New York City-set show, which premiered in 2011, ran for nine seasons and starred Meghan Markle before her life as a royal began. It achieved cult status when it began streaming on Netflix in 2023, eventually becoming its most-watched show of 2023. 'I don't think there's an actor out there who didn't want to be a part of this show,' Davis said of Suits LA. She also sees it as a 'huge responsibility.' Suits has a dedicated fanbase anxious for the new series' arrival. The 2019 Suits spin-off Pearson, which followed Gina Torres's character Jessica Pearson's pivot to politics in Chicago, lasted only one season. 'I tread lightly with reading the comments,' David said of longtime viewers' dedication to the franchise. 'I'm just reminding myself to be present and not worry too much about what might come as a result of what I'm doing. If I can just focus on the work, then all the other things will fall into place. People will embrace it if it's good work.' Gabriel Macht, who plays Suits main character Harvey Specter, announced that he will appear on Suits LA at some point as a guest star — but as Davis pointed out, he didn't reveal which episode will mark his return. 'You kind of got to keep watching, because we're not going to tell you the answer,' she teased. 'He'll pop up when the time is right.' She said that other familiar actors will appear on the show from time to time playing themselves — similar to Entourage. Another benefit of the show's Los Angeles setting is that it feels stylish compared to other legal dramas, Davis said. 'It has this gloss, this edge, this poise,' she said 'If people tune in, even if the subject matter [doesn't] resonate, they'll definitely like like what they're looking at.' Davis acknowledges that viewers don't have to watch the original series to enjoy Suits LA — but believes that they should. 'It's a knockout. You can't deny that,' she said. premieres Feb. 23 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
