Chesapeake woman injures trooper in police chase with child in car, authorities say
A Chesapeake woman was arrested Saturday following a chase with multiple law enforcement agencies, who said she was believed to be under the influence, sideswiped a deputy and injured a trooper all while driving with a small child in the back of her car. Heather Lee Barrington, 53, faces over 10 felony charges, including reckless care for a child and assault on law enforcement, jail records show. Chesapeake police said in a statement the chase began in Elizabeth City Saturday afternoon. Barrington, believed by troopers to be driving under the influence in a 2011 Lexus RX 350, had struck an Elizabeth City County Deputy's vehicle, the Virginia Beach Police Department said in a statement. Chesapeake officers began their pursuit when she drove up Dominion Boulevard onto Interstate 64 in Chesapeake, traveling westbound toward Virginia Beach. Chesapeake police deployed spike strips to try to stop her, according to a release. Barrington continued on I-64 and Virginia State Police joined the pursuit. As she neared Greenbrier Parkway, authorities positioned themselves in an attempt to slow her down and stop her, the release stated. Barrington struck several state police vehicles, which caused one vehicle to crash and its airbags to deploy, near the Indian River Road exit. She was stopped shortly thereafter, authorities said, and was found with an infant girl restrained in a safety seat in the back of her car. A trooper was injured and taken to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening. The infant was transported to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters for evaluation. No other injuries were reported, authorities said. Barrington was booked at the Chesapeake City Jail.
