British boxer facing five years in prison over road rage attack in Bali

A British boxer is facing a five-year prison sentence over an alleged road rage attack in Bali, police have said. Liam Orme, 22, from Weston-super-Mare, was doing wheelies as he sped on a rented motorcycle on May 2. He allegedly nearly struck passing driver Alit, 35, with the vehicle's front tyre, prompting the furious local to scream and curse at him. Far from apologising, however, Orme chased Alit and punched him in front of a supermarket in the Ubud district of the holiday island. Alit allegedly suffered a cut cheek and a nosebleed from the powerful twin blows unleashed by the boxer. He went to Sanjiwani Hospital for treatment before lodging a complaint with the police. Orme was then arrested at his hotel the next day following an investigation. Footage emerging online shows the boxer in an orange jumpsuit being paraded to the media today. AKBP Umar, Gianyar Regency Police Chief, said: 'We have secured evidence in the form of the suspect's passport, a red Honda CBR motorbike, and a red and black full-face helmet. 'In England he is indeed a boxer, and he is in Bali as a tourist. We will not be deporting him, but we will carry out the legal process according to the direction of the Regional Police Chief. 'Anyone who commits an act of violence, we will process it according to applicable law.' Officials said he will be charged for assault, with a maximum jail term of five years. Orme was previously sentenced by the Bristol Crown Court for careless driving, assault, and threatening behaviour in September 2023. He was handed a 12-month community order, a two-month curfew, and was given a restraining order banning contact with the other party. The judge told him: 'These were ugly offences earlier this year. You behaved like a thug in a shop, you were threatening and abusive and you were aggressive. 'That spilled out to aggressive and unpleasant driving outside.' Orme has previously said that his boxing career helped him stay out of prison. 'If I hadn't found boxing or better yet, if boxing hadn't found me I would absolutely have been in prison by now,' he said in 2020. 'My next step is to build on my experience and fighting in more national and then international competitions before turning pro. 'I also want to give back by taking troubled souls and give them the chance of boxing, because I know the impact it can have on kids like me.'
