Where Is the 'Life or Something Like It' Cast Now? See Where the Stars of the 2002 Rom-Com Are Today

In between iconic roles like Lara Croft and Jane Smith, Angelina Jolie starred in her first romantic comedy in 2002's Life or Something Like It. Directed by Stephen Herek, the film follows Seattle reporter Lanie Kerrigan (Jolie), who appears to have it all — a superstar boyfriend, a stunning apartment and a shot at a big promotion. But Lanie's perfect life begins to unravel when Prophet Jack (Tony Shalhoub), a local psychic, predicts that she will die within a matter of days. Lanie is convinced Prophet Jack is a fraud — that is, until his other predictions about the weather and traffic accidents come true. With her last day on Earth just around the corner, Lanie decides to re-examine her life and priorities. At the time, Life or Something Like It — which hit the Netflix library on April 13 — was completely new territory for Jolie, and she took on the challenge head-on. "I like the essence of the story, [but Lanie] offends me ... she's everything that I can't stand in a person," the actress told the Associated Press in 2002. "I didn't think I could [play her], so that's always a good reason to try something." In the early 2000s, Jolie was on the verge of becoming a household name and went on to star in movies such as Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Salt. Meanwhile, Shalhoub earned three Emmys for USA Network's Monk shortly after. Here's everything to know about where the cast of Life or Something Like It is now. Angelina Jolie played the lead character, Seattle reporter Lanie Kerrigan, in Life or Something Like It. Shortly after the film premiered, Jolie traded Lanie's blonde bob for Lara Croft's signature brunette braid in Tomb Raider — The Cradle of Life (2003). Her next few projects included Alexander (2004), Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005) and Wanted (2008). The actress was previously married to Jonny Lee Miller from 1996 to 1999 and Billy Bob Thornton from 2000 to 2003. She now shares six kids with Brad Pitt, whom she split from in 2016 after two years of marriage. They officially divorced in 2024. Edward Burns played Pete, Lanie's obnoxious cameraman-turned-love-interest in the 2002 film. Life or Something Like It kicked off Burns' romantic comedy era. He appeared in 2006's The Holiday, 2008's 27 Dresses and 2011's Friends with Kids. Burns is also a talented writer and director, best known for Purple Violets (2007). The actor is married to model Christy Turlington. The couple, who wed in 2003, share two kids. Tony Shalhoub played Prophet Jack, a psychic who predicted that Lanie would die within a week. While Shalhoub had already found success before starring in Life or Something Like It, his next role solidified his place in Hollywood. USA Network's Monk premiered three months after the rom-com was released, which became a fan-favorite series and ran for eight seasons. Monk earned Shalhoub countless accolades, including three Emmys and a Golden Globe. Most recently, he won an Emmy in 2019 for his role on Amazon Prime Video's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Off-screen, Shalhoub has been married to actress Brooke Adams since 1992. The couple share two daughters. Christian Kane played Lanie's famous baseball player boyfriend, Cal Cooper. He's best known for his roles in Just Married (2003) and the TV series Leverage, which ran for five seasons from 2008 to 2012. Fans might also recognize the actor from his self-titled rock band, Kane. The last time he released new music was in 2015, per his Spotify. Max Baker played Vin, another member of Lanie's camera crew. He went on to play minor roles in various projects, including two films written and directed by his Life or Something Like It costar Edward Burns: Purple Violets (2007) and Newlyweds (2011). Most recently, he appeared in two episodes of Leverage: Redemption, which stars Christian Kane — another castmate from the 2002 rom-com. Melissa Errico played Lanie's best friend, Andrea, in the 2002 rom-com. While the actress has continued working in film and TV, Errico is best known for her performances on Broadway. She earned a Tony nomination in 2013 for her role in Amour, and even has a caricature hanging on the wall at the Theater District restaurant, Sardi's. Errico and former tennis player Patrick McEnroe have been married since 1998. The pair have three daughters. Stockard Channing portrayed Lanie's broadcast news idol Deborah Connors in Life or Something Like It. Channing, whose name will forever be synonymous with Rizzo from Grease, went on to appear in Must Love Dogs (2005), 69 episodes of The West Wing and 21 episodes of Out of Practice. More recently, she played Wendy Whipple in the 2024 mini-series Knuckles. The actress has been married and divorced four times to Walter Channing Jr., Paul Schmidt, David Debin and David Rawle. Netflix's New #1 Movie Is An Awful, 2002 Angelina Jolie Film

Life or Something Like It Life or Something Like It The whims of Netflix viewers often confuse me, and that is certainly the case with what's going on right now on the service's top 10 movie list. Currently, debuting at #1 on the list is Life or Something Like It. A film that I am guessing most people haven't heard of, namely because it was a little-watched, quite bad Angelina Jolie movie from all the way back in 2002, which would have made her 27 at the time. This would have been three years after her Oscar win for Girl, Interrupted in 1999, when she broke out as a star. Life or Something Like It Rotten Tomatoes The movie is…very bad? With 121 reviews it has a very poor 28% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 44% audience score based on a whopping 25,000 reviews, meaning it's not some cult hit among viewers. Here's the synopsis: I mean, okay, weird. But why would this movie be doing so well? I have a theory that when a movie is old enough and not well-known enough, if it features a big star people recognize, they will flock to view it because they might think it's a new release. I've seen this happen a few times on Netflix, and since the service will not tell you whether people think a movie is good or bad, everyone just watches without really knowing anything about it, or possibly even when it was released just because they see, say, Angelina Jolie in the preview art. But they'll figure it out when it very much looks like a 2002 movie. Just for fun, here's the trailer: The movie co-stars Ed Burns and a pre-Monk Tony Shalhoub. Stockard Channing made her way in there too. I mean if people are liking this, more power to them, but I just think it's always funny when one of these terrible old movies is suddenly one of the most-viewed films in the country out of nowhere. This one is a particularly amusing example. But I think it also demonstrates just how ageless Angelina Jolie is 23 years later: Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, and Bluesky Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

Angelina Jolie's 2002 comedy Life or Something Like It surges on Netflix despite harsh reviews

Angelina Jolie's 2002 romantic comedy Life or Something Like It has unexpectedly surged into Netflix UK's top 10 most-watched films, despite being critically panned upon its release. The film, which stars Jolie as TV reporter Lanie Kerrigan, follows her character's existential crisis after a street prophet predicts she will die in one week. Directed by Stephen Herek and co-starring Edward Burns and Tony Shalhoub, the film received overwhelmingly negative reviews during its original run, earning just $16.9 million at the box office against a $40 million budget. It currently holds a 28% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 121 reviews, with critics calling it 'predictable' and 'a miserable mess.' Despite this, Life or Something Like It has found new life on Netflix UK since its release on the platform this week. It now ranks fifth in the service's most-watched movies. Viewer reviews have been more forgiving, calling it 'light romantic fare' and 'a good movie for a Saturday afternoon.' Jolie's performance in the film was even nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for worst actress at the time, though she has since gone on to win multiple prestigious awards, including two Oscars and three Golden Globes. In past interviews, Jolie shared that she took on the role to challenge herself in a comedic role and to portray a character vastly different from her own personality. Life or Something Like It is currently streaming on Netflix UK.
