Man drunk on Buckfast assaulted worker who refused to serve him

Gary Alexander, 34, went to Lifestyle Express on Sauchiehall Street at noon on August 21, 2024. After buying a single bottle of Buckfast, he left the city centre shop. He returned at 4pm, drunk and wanting to buy more alcohol. Due to his level of intoxication, Alexander was refused and asked to leave. Instead, he became irate and started shouting. Then, he leaned over the counter and slapped Gurpal Singh, the employee, in the face and threw items at the store. Mr Singh tried to usher him out of the store but the Pollokshields resident became violent and punched him again. Alexander, from Glasgow's Gilshochill, was restrained in the store as he shouted: 'P**i b*****d'. Police were called and Alexander was arrested and taken to Govan police station. His lawyer told the court: "Before this, he attended a meeting. "There was a break and he left the group. He went outside and during this time, he consumed alcohol and drugs." Sheriff Vincent Lunny observed: "His record is utterly appalling. This was a nasty assault." Alexander was sentenced to three years of supervision and tagged for eight months, forcing him to stay indoors between 7pm and 7am each day. A review was fixed for August 12. Sheriff Lunny told him: "I will give you the benefit of the doubt. "This is a shocking offence but sending you to jail is just not working."
