Springfield lecture honors Black History Month
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – In Springfield, the annual 'Lift Every Voice Lecture Series' kicked off in observance of Black History Month.
The lectures are held at the Spring of Hope Church of God in Christ each week of this month— the series will feature keynote speakers–poets, and musical artists, to celebrate black culture and leadership.
Tuesday night, leading the series was Dr. Whitney Battle-Baptiste, professor of anthropology and director of the WEB Dubois Center at UMass Amherst. Bishop Talbert Swan told 22News, 'We are collaborating, we are providing information, inspiration. We are coming together to hear from those who are out front in our community and we are supporting them, and we are coming together as a community to fight this tide of regression and move this nation forward like we always have.'
The next lecture will be held on February 18th, led by rapper and activist 'Dee' who will speak on the global impact of hip hop and rap as a force for education and change.
WWLP-22News, an NBC affiliate, began broadcasting in March 1953 to provide local news, network, syndicated, and local programming to western Massachusetts. Watch the 22News Digital Edition weekdays at 4 p.m. on
