9/11 memorial breaks ground
May 14—LIMA — The Allen County 9/11 Memorial Foundation hopes to dedicate a memorial on Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Greater Lima Region Park and Amphitheater, 24 years later after 2,977 lives were lost on the tragic day of Sept. 11, 2001.
The $60,000 memorial will display steel from the World Trade Center, limestone from the Pentagon and a boulder from Shanksville, Penn., where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed.
The project has been ongoing for quite some time.
"Our foundation has worked tirelessly for quite a few years, from the board members presently and from the past, thank you," said Allen County 9/11 Memorial Foundation President Jeff Rosebrock during a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday.
Rosebrock gave shoutouts to many businesses and Lima locals such as Tracie Sanchez, president of Lima Pallet Co. and developer of Lima's Central District; Rick Stolly, City of Lima deputy public works director; and Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith.
Lima Police Chief James Baker shared how the memorial will haunt those who lived through it, while the younger generations can learn exactly what happened that day.
"I'm sure pretty much everyone here can remember where they were at. There's an entire generation that were not born yet," Baker said. "It is incumbent upon us to do a memorial, a physical reminder to help them see what had taken place."
