Lina Stores is opening a new restaurant and bar in Canary Wharf

In our humble opinion, Lina Stores is one of the best pasta producers in the city. It's been crafting fresh anelli, tagliatelle, farfalle and fettuccine for more than 80 years, opening its very first deli on Soho's Brewer Street in 1944. Since then, more pastel green tiled Lina Stores have sprouted up across the London, with one even opening in Manchester last year. Now, Lina Stores is launching its tenth restaurant, deli and cocktail bar in Canary Wharf. Sat on Crossrail Place, a short walk from Canary Wharf station, the new all-in-one Lina outlet will have everything that the Italian brand has become known for since first opening its original deli. The new place be open for lunch and dinner every day of the week with capacity for around 100 diners. There'll be antipasti, fresh pasta dishes (think crab linguine, spaghetti carbonara or truffle tagliolini) and other Italian classics to indulge in (like aubergine parmigiana, affogato and tiramisu). There will be options, for veggies, vegans, halal and gluten-free folk, too. On the ground floor, you'll find an open-plan Italian deli, with strong Italian coffee, salads, panini and dried pasta to take home, and a sultry low-lit bar tucked away at the back serving up a host of Italian-inspired concoctions. An Italian food haven. Lina Stores Canary Wharf will be open for business from Monday, June 9. . The best Italian restaurants in London.

Time travellers' tales: The Book of Records, by Madeleine Thien, reviewed

Those who have read Madeleine Thien's bestselling Do Not Say We Have Nothing will recognise The Book of Records as being the title of the manuscript at its heart – a dangerously dissenting history of China. In her latest novel, Thien uses the title to explore the future rather than the past – or so it seems at first. Extensive flooding has caused Lina and her father to leave Foshan and retreat to 'the Sea', a labyrinthine 'nothing place' where people usually shelter just for a short while before moving on. It resembles Kowloon Walled City, the immense, densely populated structure that, before being demolished, was close to where Thien's mother grew up. The Sea is also an uncanny manifestation of space conflated with time, where historical figures live in neighbouring rooms. Lina treasures her last remaining three volumes of an encyclopaedic series, The Great Lives of Voyagers. One focuses on the Tang dynasty poet Du Fu; another on the 17th-century Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza; and the third on Hannah Arendt, the 20th-century German political theorist. When Lina discovers a secret door leading to three neighbours – Jupiter, Bento and Blucher – who turn out to be mysterious iterations of these three great voyagers, they proceed to tell her their tales. So, in an extraordinary narrative space, Lina's story frames those of the impoverished Du Fu and his struggle for recognition; Spinoza's exile from Amsterdam's Jewish Quarter; and Arendt's terrifying flight from Nazi Germany. The rendering of these lives is vivid, gripping and moving, especially in comparison to Lina's muted philosophical conversations with her father. But there are three other lives that are painfully missing: those of Lina's mother, brother and great-aunt.

The Documentary Podcast Assignment: Spain - can an algorithm predict murder?

Early on a Sunday morning in February in the Spanish seaside town of Benalmadena, Catalina, a 48-year-old mother of four, was killed at home – the building was set on fire. Her ex-partner was arrested and remains in custody. In January, Lina – as she was known to her family and friends – had reported her ex-partner to the police for ill-treatment and threatening behaviour. And by doing so, she became one of around 100,000 cases of gender-based violence active in Spain's VioGen system. VioGen is an algorithm used by the police – it's a risk assessment tool. Based on a woman's answers to a series of questions, it calculates the likelihood she will be attacked again so police resources can be allocated to protect those most in danger. The level of risk could be negligible, low, medium, high or extreme. Lina was recorded as being at 'medium' risk of a further attack by the man who was her ex-partner. Three weeks later, she was dead. VioGen's critics are concerned about the number of women registered on the system who are then murdered by men who are former or current partners. Its champions claim that without VioGen there would be far more violence against women. With AI in the ascendency, and governments increasingly turning to algorithms to make decisions affecting society, for Crossing Continents, Linda Pressly and Esperanza Escribano investigate the story of VioGen and domestic violence in Spain.
