Community support for family involved in deadly Mother's Day wreck going beyond state lines

JACKSON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — The Paint Rock Fire Department hosted a barbecue to raise money for a Fayetteville, Tennessee, family involved in a deadly wreck earlier this month. On May 11, a truck pulling cargo for Amazon hit six cars on I-75 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, with two of the cars catching fire in the crash. Two people were killed and eight others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals. The Smith family was among those injured and killed in the wreck. 'Don't underestimate its power': Remembering water safety when visiting Little River this summer The father, Lane, was pronounced dead on the scene. His 22-month-old son, Sawyer, died at a local hospital on May 18, exactly one week after the wreck. The mother, Baleigh, and 8-year-old sister, Brynlee, were seriously injured in the wreck. Brynlee is currently being treated for burns at Vanderbilt. Since the wreck, businesses across Lincoln County, Tennessee, have poured out their support for the family. The Bank of Lincoln County opened a donation account for the Smith family, something representatives say is crucial due to fraudulent activity on online donation platforms. Saturday's barbeque showed the support for the Smiths crosses state lines. The goal was to sell over 400 plates in an effort to raise about $8,000. Lane's grandparents, Betty and Danny Johnson, attended the event and described their grandson as an extraordinary person. 📲 to stay updated on the go. 📧 to have news sent to your inbox. 'Always a smile on his face. Helped everybody in the community,' Danny Johnson said. 'Just somebody that you couldn't believe was to be 23-year-old and be that much of a man.' Johnson said young Sawyer loved to be with his dad. 'Every time Lane got off, he was on the tractor or on the gator going to feed the cows,' Johnson said. 'He loved his moo moos.' The grandparents call the tragedy a nightmare. 'You feel like it's unbearable at times,' Betty Johnson said. 'It's the worst nightmare you can have,' Danny Johnson said. 'Just unbelievable, I never dreamed of it.' Paint Rock Fire Chief Finis Johnson knows Danny and Betty, which is why his department stepped in to help. 'We're just helping, that's all I can say, wanted to do something to help,' Finis Johnson said. 'It's a tragedy and everything like that, and if the community can come together and help support something like that, it's good.' The outpouring of support from people who don't even know the family means the world to them. 'People here are extraordinary,' Danny Johnson said. 'Small community and their heart just goes out and they're willing to help.' 'This is what you call America and Americans. Everybody wants to help, a lot of kind-hearted people,' Danny Johnson said. 'There's a lot of bad people, too, but I'm gonna say the majority have a heart and they're willing to help when needed, and we just appreciate this so much.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Camp Fire now at 720 acres, 4% contained

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A brush fire burning near Fort Stanton in Lincoln County is now at 720 acres with 4 percent containment, the New Mexico State Forestry Division announced on Monday, May 26. Camp Fire burning in Lincoln County near Fort Stanton The Forestry Division said most of the burned acres occurred on Sunday, as there was minimal fire spread on Monday. Helicopters made targeted water drops on hot spots still smoldering. Fire crews worked to remove burning material near the control lines to reduce the chance of it escaping the control lines and reigniting. Smoke could still be seen in the area, the Forestry Division said. The Forestry Division said the area affected by the fire is a specially managed area by the BLM and the State of New Mexico. The BLM-managed land is part of the Fort Stanton- Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area, and the state land involved in the fire is the historic fort, managed by the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. Three historical structures were damaged at Fort Stanton, including two wooden structures from the 1930s built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and a gymnasium built in 1944 by German sailors who were picked up after their ship sunk, the Forestry Division said. The Forestry Division said cloud cover, moderate temperatures, and milder winds helped to moderate fire behavior on Monday. A thunderstorm warning is in effect for the area Monday evening, and there is a chance of rain again on Tuesday afternoon, May 27, the Forestry Division said. The Forestry Division said evacuations remain for the Fort Stanton, Rob Jaggers Campground, and the Rio Bonito and West Mesa Road dispersed camping areas. Fort Stanton is closed to the public. Highway 220 is closed in the Fort Stanton area, the Forestry Division said. 'BLM Roswell District, Lincoln County and the NM Forestry Division are all under fire restrictions or a burn ban. Campfires of any kind (wood, charcoal, wood stoves), chainsaw use, smoking outdoors, operating motorized vehicles off designated roads and welding are all prohibited,' read the news release by the Forestry Division. New technology helps Lincoln County deputies solve crimes, keep guns off the street

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — New technology in Lincoln County is helping deputies solve crimes and get guns off the streets. It's a tiny camera with big power. 'It's been extremely helpful as of lately,' said Det. Jake Weathers with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office. 'It kind of goes back to you don't know what you did without them.' They're called license plate readers. There are about two dozen of them placed in high-traffic areas across the county. 'They take two separate pictures — one of the back of the car and then a focus up on the license plate area of the car,' said Weathers. 'Then what that does is it stores it in a data bank and we can run it by make and model of the vehicle, color of the vehicle.' The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office has had them for about two months now, and they recently helped crack their first big case. It led to the swift arrest of two people accused of stealing multiple guns from a business. Divine Rodziewicz, 23, and Dashawn Donaldson, 23, are both charged with ten felony counts of larceny of a firearm, and one felony count each of breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, and conspiracy. Deputies tracked down the suspects and recovered five of the stolen firearms using photos taken by the cameras of the suspect vehicle. 'Getting those off the street was our number one priority when it came to this case,' said Weathers. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Asbestos clinic forced to close in Montana town where thousands have been sickened by dust

BILLINGS, Mont. — An asbestos screening clinic in a small Montana town where thousands have been sickened by toxic dust from a nearby mine has been abruptly shuttered by authorities following a court order to seize the clinic's assets to pay off a judgment to the railroad BNSF . The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office closed on Wednesday the Center for Asbestos Related Disease in Libby, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the U.S.-Canada border. The town of about 3,000 people is near a mine that produced asbestos dust for decades, and the clinic has been at the forefront of efforts to help victims.
