Bridge set to be demolished as part of hotel plan
The demolition of a pedestrian bridge looks set to happen in May as part of a multi-million pound development in Lincoln. Lincolnshire Co-op has outline planning permission to build a hotel on the site of the former City Square shopping centre. As previously reported, the plans include demolishing the footbridge over Melville Street, which the Co-op described as "a barrier to development, both logistically and in terms of visual impact". The company said it was liaising with the Department of Transport and other partners to confirm a date and road closures for the work. The footbridge is a popular spot for photographers due to scenic views of the city and Lincoln Cathedral. Notices have been placed on the bridge advertising the decision to authorise the closure under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. Demolition work was expected to happen over a weekend to minimise disruption, the Co-op added.
