Police ramp up efforts to curb drug-impaired driving on 4/20 weekend
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — You might see some extra police patrols on the streets this holiday weekend, and we're not talking about the Easter holiday.
April 20 is of course, known as 4/20: a day celebrated by marijuana enthusiasts.
The Governor's Traffic Safety committee is reminding drivers that it is illegal to drive under the influence of cannabis.
State and local police are targeting drug-impaired drivers in an enforcement campaign which began Friday and runs through Sunday,
News 8 spoke with Monroe County's Stop DWI Program Coordinator about the effects marijuana has on drivers.
'We do see that impairment can look like a slower reaction time,' Lindsay Tomidy said. 'If you've ever seen someone high, you can guess how it would be difficult to control a 3,000 lb vehicle, and we expect the consumption to be higher across this entire weekend.'
Driving under the influence of cannabis could lead to an arrest, a DWAI charge, or worse. Designating a sober driver or using rideshare services is encouraged this weekend.
