A viral TikTok video showing a kitten fighting off an unexpected dinner thief has left users across the platform in hysterics.
The hilarious video, shared on Sunday under the username @stevenlynn18582, shows the kitten enjoying his kibble on the porch as a raccoon pretends to befriend him, and then proceeds to help himself to his dinner.
The kitten tries his best to protect his food from the sneaky intruder, and the raccoon does eventually go away, but not before grabbing a pile of the feline's kibble and some of his water.
Raccoons are found in urban and rural areas throughout most states, and when they get close to our homes, it's usually to get access to our trash, which is one of their favorite sources of food.
While some of them may be friendly, they can indeed be a danger to both humans and domestic pets. Even those that look friendly can attack you, putting you at risk of contracting diseases such as rabies, which can be fatal.
Not all raccoons have rabies, but the rabid ones are the most likely to attack, and since it can be hard to tell, it's better to just keep raccoons off your property altogether, especially if you have pets who have access to the outdoors.
To keep them from hanging out around your home, the Humane World for Animals suggests using hot sauce, placing sensor lights, or a battery-operated radio in your yard, to scare them away.
Perhaps the best way to prevent a raccoon problem is to secure trash cans with bungee cords so they can't access it. It's also important to never purposefully feed them, keep any pet food inside, and remove any bird feeders.
If you do have a raccoon near your property, call wildlife control to have it removed professionally and avoid the risk of rabies.
