Appeal for Telford cancer treatment centre
A charity has launched a £5m appeal to create a new cancer treatment Davies Cancer Support said the facility in Telford would "double the capacity of chemotherapy provision" in the said it would offer up to 30 chemotherapy bays, outpatient clinics, a specialist urology investigations unit, and a lung diagnostic charity said the Sunflower Appeal was its biggest appeal to date. The cancer services are due to be available in Telford by 2029 and are designed to allow people in the area "to access care and services closer to home", the charity Atkin, the charity's CEO, said: "More people will be able to access chemotherapy treatment when they need it, reducing waiting times and associated stress and worry, and helping contribute to improved outcomes."She said a number of fundraising events had been planned to get the four-year appeal started. Royal harpist Alis Huws returns to Powys for charity concert
A former Royal harpist from Powys who performed at the King's coronation will join a line-up of talented local musicians and choirs for a special charity concert in Llanfair Caereinion. Alis Huws, who grew up in the Banw Valley, will perform alongside award-winning flautist Carys Gittins, Cor Meibion Machynlleth and Vocalease women's choir on Saturday, May 10 in aid of the Montgomeryshire branch of Lingen Davies and the Leri Cancer Unit at Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth. The Classic FM Rising Star was appointed official harpist in 2019 to King Charles when he was the Prince of Wales and has performed alongside Katherine Jenkins and Only Men Aloud as well as international and UK performances. Her performance of Welsh composer Karl Jenkins' Tros y Garreg at the King's coronation in May 2022 was watched by millions of people across the world. Alis' friend and Carys was the winner of the Instrumental Blue Ribband at the National Eisteddfod in Cardiff and has been a member of the London Sinfonietta Academy and Chipping Campden Festival Academy Orchestra. Most recently, she performed with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, amongst numerous accomplished orchestras. Cor Meibion Machynlleth is a hugely successful choir in eisteddfodau, both locally and nationally, which will also be performing alongside Vocalease, Alis and Carys as they prepare their repertoire for Llangollen Eisteddfod in July. The concert will be held at Caereinion Leisure Centre in Llanfair Caereinion at 7pm but doors will be open from 6.30pm on Saturday, May 10. Tickets, which will not be available on the door, can be bought for £15 from Welshpool Jewellers, High Street, Nigel Pugh Motors at Newtown's Lion Works, Machynlleth's Siop Elin Angharad and also by contacting Vocalese on Facebook Messenger. Vocalease will also be performing at Welshpool Methodist Church on Saturday, June 21; with Penybontfawr Male Voice Choir at a to-be-confirmed venue on Saturday, October 4; and at Montgomery Town Hall on Saturday, October 18.
