David Linthicum to be sentenced for shooting 2 Baltimore County police officers
David Linthicum, 26, of Cockeysville is set to be sentenced Tuesday for shooting two Baltimore County police officers during a multi-day manhunt that began as a mental health call in Feb. 2023. In Sep. 2024, Linthicum was found guilty in Baltimore County Circuit Court of four counts of attempted first-degree murder and related crimes. He faces a possible life sentence. Two officers shot in multi-day manhunt The string of events began on February 8, 2023, when Linthicum's father called 911, reporting his son was armed and experiencing a mental health crisis at their Cockeysville home. Baltimore County police responded to a home in the area of Powers Avenue in Cockeysville around 2:30 p.m. When police entered the home, Linthicum's father led them toward a basement bedroom, where they encountered David sitting on his bed with a rifle. Linthicum then opened fire with an AR-15 rifle, firing 16 rounds. Officer Barry Jordan was struck in the lower back and hip. Jordan was able to exit the house with the assistance of fellow officers, who realized he was hit as they fled. After the shooting, Linthicum escaped the initial barricade and disappeared into nearby woods, prompting an hours-long barricade situation and shelter-in-place order for the surrounding neighborhood. The next day, Detective Jonathan Chih spotted Linthicum walking on Warren Road. When Chih approached, Linthicum fired 14 shots from the AR-15, striking Chih in the face and arms. Linthicum then stole Chih's unmarked police truck and fled. Chih was taken by ambulance then helicopter to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, where he recovered. Linthicum was arrested on Feb. 10, 2023, after nearly three days on the run, in a rocky area in Fallston, Harford County. Trial highlights dramatic body-camera footage, officers' testimony The trial featured dramatic body-worn camera footage showing the shootings and officers' desperate attempts to help wounded colleagues. Officer David Allen, one of the officers who responded to Linthicum's home, testified about being terrified at the barrage of gunfire. Officer April Arnett, who also responded to the house, recalled debris hitting her face as she fled. Jordan, who was with Allen and Arnett, recounted the chaos and confusion after being shot. Detective Chih testified about being shot at close range, initially thinking Linthicum was a hitchhiker before the attack. During the trial, Linthicum's defense argued that police mishandled a mental health crisis, deviated from proper protocols, and unnecessarily escalated the situation. They claimed Linthicum did not know police were present during the initial encounter and that he never intended to kill anyone.

Baltimore's Federal Hill to see increased patrols courtesy of public safety grant
Baltimore residents can expect to see more patrols in the Federal Hill neighborhood. The Federal Hill Neighborhood Association is receiving a $40,000 Entertainment District Public Safety Grant from the Governor's Office of Crime Prevention and Police. The grant will address safety concerns in and around the Federal Hill Entertainment District. The neighborhood association is using that money for the Baltimore City Sheriff's Office to provide additional patrols in "critical areas at key times" in the area. The association said the patrols started in mid-March and "can address a variety of different public safety issues depending on the needs of the community." "I think it's actually pretty safe," said Eli Linthicum, the owner of Game On Bar and Arcade . "Federal Hill gets a bad rep. Baltimore gets a bad rep." Linthicum said that with the influx of people, it helps to have a visible police presence at night. "Every night when we close down, there's always at least four officers outside waiting for people to come out," Linthicum said. Just up the street, Jennifer Goldszmidt, the owner of Zoe's Just Dezzerts , identified some safety concerns in Federal Hill. She had damage to her business door. "Somebody came along and smashed one of the panes," Goldszmidt said. "We actually saw the rocks who threw them at the window. That was scary." These Federal Hill business owners agree that additional patrols in the busy district are a smart move. "I think it will make the whole neighborhood feel safer," Goldszmidt said. "There's a lot of people going out here at night and a lot of people want to feel safe," Linthicum said. "You do feel that way when there's people walking around and just making sure people are getting in their cars well and going home." Goldszmidt hopes these patrols will help create a greater sense of security for both neighbors and business owners. She also hopes this allows her and her neighbors to get to know the deputies watching these streets. "When you know a name, a face, it connects us more," she said. "I think that makes a difference in building community."

Odessa sex offender accused of harboring runaway child faces new charges
ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- A registered sex offender who was arrested late last month after a runaway teen was found in his home is facing new charges after the teen was released from the hospital and told her story to investigators. Michael Gene Linthicum has now been charged with Abandon/Endanger a Child Criminal Negligence and Purchase/Furnish Alcohol to a Minor. That's in addition to his other charges, which include Harboring a Runaway and Failure to Comply with Sex Offender Requirements. According to an Odessa Police Department report, in early February, the family of a 14-year-old girl sought help after the child ran away from home. The investigation into her whereabouts intensified late last month after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children issued an alert for information in partnership with Ring Neighbors App, a feature that reaches millions of users providing real-time assistance in locating missing children. On February 28, the teen contacted her loved ones from a phone belonging to Linthicum, which prompted a search of his property. At the home on Golder Avenue, investigators said they found the 14-year-old and learned that she'd been staying with a woman named Anita Newton and Linthicum since she ran away from home on February 1. Both Newton and Linthicum arrested at the scene and were charged with harboring a runaway, which is a crime in Texas that is punishable by a fine of up to $4,000 and or one year in jail. New documents showed that when OPD arrived at Linthicum's home and found the teen, she was so intoxicated that she needed medical attention. Upon her release from the hospital, the girl spoke with a forensic investigator and said she'd lived with the suspects for 28 days and that during that time, Linthicum gave her alcohol, marijuana, and methamphetamines. Linthicum remained in the Ector County Law Enforcement Center as of Monday afternoon on a combined $110,000 bond. What is harboring a runaway child? Harboring a runaway child occurs when someone shelters a minor without the consent of their legal guardian The minor may have escaped from a detention facility, probation officer, or peace officer The minor may be voluntarily absent from home without their parent or guardian's consent Parents and guardians can press charges against anyone who harbors their child without permission.
