Alex Anzalone's cryptic post adds fuel to the perceived contract demands in Detroit
Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone has remained away from the team's voluntary offseason workouts thus far. The team captain is entering the final year of his contract (the deal voids for 2026) and the presumption is that Anzalone, who turns 31 in September, is looking for more money, more guaranteed money, or some combination of both to stay in Detroit. Anzalone's latest social media post is throwing gasoline onto that smoldering situation, one that head coach Dan Campbell stated last week didn't concern him at all. The Instagram post shows Anzalone working out away from the team and looking impressive physically. Anzalone makes no mention at all of the Lions in the extended video clip, nor does he refer to Detroit in his simple comment, "In life, you have options. Which will you choose?" Based on the comments to the clip, including one from Lions teammate Jahmyr Gibbs, it's abundantly clear that the masses believe Anzalone is referring to his perceived contractual squabble with the Lions in the video. Anzalone is under contract for $6 million in 2025, though none of that salary is guaranteed. Including his $100,000 roster bonus, Anzalone's total compensation is outside the top 25 LBs in the NFL for 2025. Tracking the Detroit Lions draft class Relative Athletic Scores
No matter what position you play in football, you have to have some degree of athleticism. Some positions may require more than others, but you still have to be able to functionally move around, especially given you are moving in awkward positions on the football field. Fortunately, there is a way to help measure a player's athleticism and compare that relative to his peers. Kent Lee Platte created Relative Athletic Score, which gives a player a score from 0-10 and factors in his size and various athletic drills done at the Scouting Combine, including the 40-yard dash, the short shuttle and the 3-cone. Advertisement With the draft in the books, we are able to get a sense of how athletic each player is and how they stack up to the competition. We'll take a look at the scores and posts for each player in the draft class. Connor Galvin's MCL injury almost certainly impacted the Lions decision to move on
The Lions have decided to not tender Connor Galvin as an ERFA (exclusive rights free agent). During preseason, Galvin appeared to be heading for a role as the primary backup OT. What's notable here is that the Lions only had to offer a veteran minimum contract to keep him for next season. The fact that this was still too much suggests that the injury that cost him the entire season is very likely to blame. This injury occurred during the Lions first preseason game. He was rolled up on and immediately grabbed at his left knee. Connor Galvin MCL injury video-Watch #76 L lower leg gets trapped causing him to do the splits and land awkwardly tearing L MCL-Reported season ending surgery indicates significant tear — Jimmy Liao MD | Detroit Lions Morning Rounds (@JimmyLiaoMD) August 9, 2024 The public report was an MCL for which he had surgery. Most MCL tears don't need surgery so this one likely had complications that made natural healing difficult or had associated damage. For example, Derrick Barnes later in the year had surgery for a combined MCL and PCL tear. Other potential damage includes meniscus tears which can be a long-term problem. The decision by the Lions to not even offer the veteran minimum suggests there are health concerns going forward. What helps him is that he is still a young player who turns only 25 next week. Hopefully, Galvin can make a full recovery and resume what looked to be a promising career.
