Ovid truck theft suspect may have stolen Amazon packages in Dimondale. What to know
Police say the suspect in an ongoing manhunt may have been seen in Dimondale Friday, where he stole Amazon packages off a porch.
The suspect was still driving a white 2015 Chevrolet Silverado pickup that was reported stolen from the Michigan Milk Producers Association employee parking lot the previous day, police said in an update posted on Ovid Police Department's Facebook page.
He was wearing a dark green jacket with a black stripe that may have been from the truck, according to the post.
Dimondale is about 40 miles from where the truck was stolen, just southwest of Lansing.
Ovid Police Chief Lisa Rousseau asked the suspect to turn himself in in comments on a Facebook update.
"If the subject is tired of running, please, give us a call," she said.
The Facebook post asked anyone who saw the truck or the suspect to call 911 immediately, and to not approach the suspect. The Facebook post said the suspect may be in possession of a firearm.
Rousseau said people "driving distracted" may be a reason he hadn't been spotted.
"For those few, complaining that he hasn't been caught yet, this is frustrating for law enforcement, too," Rousseau said. "There are many considerations. It is likely, thousands of people have driven past him, and don't even 'see' him, because they are driving distracted."
Rousseau said police are continuing to search, but have other duties as well.
"You have a handful of law enforcement in any given area, still taking calls for service, as life must go on. There are many others in need of our services," she said, and asked the public to understand why more information isn't shared. "We share as much information that we can, without compromising the criminal case. There is a saying we use in law enforcement: Cases are won or lost outside of the courtroom. What happens prior to the criminal case being heard in court, all matters."
Rousseau said in a statement Thursday evening that shortly after 8 a.m. an Ovid police sergeant went to an address on Warren Road in Shiawassee County, just outside the village limit, to assist the Shiawassee County Sheriff's Office.
Police at the address placed a person under arrest due to outstanding warrants. A second suspect, a man, fled on foot.
The man was spotted on Michigan Milk Producers Association surveillance cameras as 9:39 a.m. At 11:15, police learned a 2015 white Chevrolet Silverado pickup was reported stolen from the MMPA employee parking lot.
