Jewish Community Center hosting 14th annual Literacy Day

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Jewish Community Center is promoting literacy through a special two-part event for the community. The JCC is hosting its 14th annual Literacy Day, a free event that underscores the importance of reading. During the school day, kids from the JCC's daycare program and neighboring Hillel Academy had the opportunity to enrich themselves in books and hands-on activities through the help of 20 community vendors. In line with this year's Fairytale and Fables theme, the Tri-Cities Opera performed 'The Ugly Duckling' for all the children. Chief Operating Officer Raychel Reilly says the day is all about instilling a love of books and a love of learning. 'We know that iPads and TV can really pull attention nowadays and it's really important to us to make sure that this concept is continuing to grow and making sure we do it in a fun and exciting way,' Reilly said. The JCC is holding an evening program from 5:30 to 7:30 tonight for the public with a big book reading, a dance party, and many more hands-on activities. JCC makes reading fun with Literacy Day

VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Jewish Community Center is celebrating the joys of reading and inspiring children to pick up a good book. The JCC is hosting its 14th Annual Literacy Day on Wednesday. The free, family-friendly event highlights the importance of reading through games and interactive activities. This year's theme is Fairytales and Fables. There will be nearly 20 vendors hosting different stations, including dress up, pretend play, arts and crafts, and a dance party. Literacy Day Chair and JCC Board Member Rachel Priest says each child will leave with a free age-appropriate book. 'They get to pick any book they want from our supply of free books. We have them by age range of the kid, and they get to take home, hopefully, a book that they haven't read before and find a new and exciting story,' said Priest. The books were all donated by community members and organizations. Literacy Day also serves as an opportunity for the JCC to show off the services it offers. Chief Operating Officer Raychel Reilly says the JCC is committed to instilling a love of learning in its students from a very young age. 'We internally promote literacy and a love of learning and a love of books. So, having this big excitement around Literacy Day helps, I think, foster that love of learning and books,' said Reilly. Literacy Day will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It is open to all who wish to attend. Audit alleges NYSEG violations

(WIVT/WBGH) – A third-party audit of NYSEG and its sister company RG&E has resulted in a long list of recommendations and some possible violations. The New York State Public Service Commission ordered the audit in September 2023 as part of its investigation into alleged mismanagement of NYSEG's utility billing systems. According to the PSC, parent company Avangrid underspends on its asset management, contributing to poor electric reliability performance. The auditor also found that Avangrid does not have appropriate controls for the outsourcing of its customer service and that its customer service performance reports have been inaccurate. News 34 reached out to Avangrid to request a response. Click here to read the full news release. New York State DOT remembers fallen highway workers

KIRKWOOD, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – In the heart of road construction season, the New York State DOT paused to reflect on the lives lost to crashes in highway work zones in our area. Officials from the Department of Transportation Region 9 gathered at the memorial located at the Southern Tier Welcome Center rest area along Interstate 81 in Kirkwood Monday morning. A wreath-laying ceremony honored the eight men who have died in work zone crashes in the region, both DOT employees and workers from contractors doing construction on behalf of DOT. Assistant Commissioner Jim Rusak says the fallen workers each left their homes fully expecting to return home to their families at the end of their shifts. Rusak says despite the pleas to slow down and move over, crashes continue. 'Last year, we had 322 intrusions into work zones in New York State. Resulting in two motorist fatalities, and 138 injuries. Throughout the history of DOT, 58 workers have been killed in work zones. Every one of them are real people, deeply loved by their families who continue to feel the pain of their absence,' said Rusak. This year's ceremony marks the 20th anniversary of a horrific crash on Interstate 81 in the Town of Chenango, near the Castle Creek exit, in which a speeding and inattentive tour bus crashed, causing a chain reaction that claimed the lives of three contractors. Wayne Bonsell, Jason Pessoni, and Jonathon Randall were all employees of Economy Paving. Bonsell's sisters were at today's event. Holley Peterson says her brother was hard working, generous, and had a great sense of humor. 'There's no need for speed. Slow down, watch out for people, it's not worth it, it's not worth it. Take your time. Be patient,' said Peterson. The Town of Chenango deaths spurred New York's Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, which increased the penalties for construction zone infractions. Rusak says the state is also rolling out speed cameras in work zones. He says in the areas where the automated enforcement has been implemented, there have been 425,000 fines mailed to drivers, but, so far, no injuries from crashes. Willow Point appoints new administrator, increases wages for workers

VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – There was a celebration at Willow Point last week, marking the arrival of a new leader and more staff at higher salaries. Willow Point Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Vestal held a pinning ceremony on Thursday recognizing some veteran employees for their decades of service. The Broome County owned and operated nursing home has seen an influx of new faces in recent months. Since February 1, when the county made significant increases to the pay it offers to nurses and aides, 71 people have been hired. There's also a new administrator. Sonya Moshier comes to Willow Point with 36 years of running senior living facilities. Moshier says she's looking forward to putting her experience to work. 'I've overseen sub-acute, palliative and different types of memory care units. I'd like to be able to bring some of that history and be able to implement services here at Willow Point,' said Moshier. Broome County Executive Jason Garnar says the new employees are allowing Willow Point to reopen some wings that had to be closed due to staffing shortages. The pay increases were accomplished by shifting funds around within the nursing home's budget. The new hires will decrease Willow Point's reliance since COVID on expensive travel nurses. Garnar says the recent moves illustrate the county's commitment to keeping Willow Point. 'Broome County is absolutely committed to Willow Point. We're committed to our seniors, and we're committed to having a public nursing home here that takes care of our seniors. We're making critical investments, not just talking about it, we're actually putting millions of dollars into it. And we will continue to do so to ensure that our residents receive the highest level of care that they deserve,' said Garnar. Garnar gave credit to Mike Keenan, the former administrator of Good Shepherd Village at Endwell, who had been serving as a consultant for Willow Point. Keenan helped to devise the salary restructuring, which the legislature approved, as well as the hiring of Moshier.
