Free tax filing assistance for low-income Iowa households
DES MOINES, Iowa — Appointments are available now through April 15th for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.
VITA is a free federal program for people whose entire household salary is $67,000 yearly or less.
Karla Evans, the Director of Tax Services at the Iowa Center for Economic Success, said that VITA also helps those with disabilities and language barriers. Evans also says many families delay filing if they haven't done so in years.

'So taxes are just scary for people. They think that they're complicated. One of the things we see is people that maybe haven't filed for a couple of years. And so they're afraid that if they come and get their taxes done now, that they're going to have penalties or the IRS is going to come after them. And that's not the case,' said Evans.
While the Iowa Center for Economic Success specifically is designed to help families facing financial barriers regarding filing, Evans went on to say, 'If they have a bigger business, we actually are just starting a small business tax program on a sliding scale in partnership with Intuit this year. And so we now can do taxes for a fee, but it's a very reasonable cost on the sliding scale.'
The Iowa Center operates 17 separate VITA sites across the state. To schedule an appointment go online to A valid photo ID, wage statements, and social security cards are required for all persons in the home.
To learn more about filing or to check the status of your refund go to The Internal Revenue Service. The IRS is preparing for more than 140 million tax returns this year and the agency expects to issue refunds in less than 21 days. Returns are accepted for the 2024 fiscal year through April 15th, 2025.
