New technology introduced in fight against invasive species
HONOLULU (KHON2) — A new type of technology is being introduced in the long fight against Little Fire Ants (LFA). Lanikai Pillbox Trail to temporarily close for Little Fire Ant treatment May is invasive species awareness month, and the Oʻahu Invasive Species Committee has been busy implementing new technology to aid in the fight against LFA eradication with the use of drones. WakeUp2Day's Chris Latronic went live in Kahaluʻu to learn more. He met with Erin Bishop, the Outreach Coordinator for the Oʻahu Invasive Species Committee & Timo Sullivan of Aloha Aina Drone Company to witness their current engagement of an LFA infestation area using a heavy-duty aerial drone. The Ka'iwa Ridge Trail, popularly known as the Lanikai Pillbox Trail, was recently closed and was determined that an aerial approach would be the best option to treat the tricky ridge terrain with Aloha 'Āina Drones selected to support the project. Drones are being used to deliver growth-inhibiting treatments to areas that are difficult to access by foot or by traditional methods that would normally take excessive personal time and effort. Check out more news from around Hawaii 'Drone technology is advancing our efforts to move this site from an active infestation to eradication,' said Erin Bishop. 'Drones offer a faster, safer and more cost-effective way to treat large, steep areas.' As of April 2025, there have been over 80 LFA detections on island. Bishop added, 'We're thrilled to move forward with this innovative approach — without it, the threat of LFA spreading into surrounding residential and recreational areas would remain. This marks a major step forward in protecting our communities and environment.' The project also includes long-term monitoring to ensure that LFA populations do not rebound after treatment. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Lava fountains erupt at Kīlauea as episode 20 begins
HONOLULU (KHON2) — Lava is once again lighting up the summit of Kīlauea Volcano, as the U.S. Geological Survey reports a new phase of sustained lava fountaining that began Tuesday evening. Lanikai Pillbox Trail to temporarily close for Little Fire Ant treatment According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), Episode 20 of the ongoing eruption kicked off at 5:28 p.m. Tuesday, when intermittent gas bursts from the volcano's north vent suddenly transitioned into continuous, vigorous fountains of lava reaching more than 500 feet high. The lava is now flowing rapidly across the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, even pouring over the south vent, which remains quiet for now. This latest activity was accompanied by a quick shift in ground movement — from inflation to deflation — and a spike in volcanic tremor. Scientists say the ground at the summit tilted by about 8 microradians, a sign of significant underground changes. Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You Prior to the eruption, low-level activity had been building for nearly 31 hours, including small dome fountains and slow-moving flows from both vents. This marks the 20th eruptive episode at Kīlauea since December 23, 2024. These episodes have varied in length — some lasting just half a day, others continuing for up to a week — with brief pauses in between. All recent eruptions have remained confined within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. There are no signs of volcanic activity spreading to Kīlauea's East Rift Zone or Southwest Rift Zone at this time, according to HVO. The volcano's alert level remains at WATCH, and the aviation color code is ORANGE, indicating that eruptive activity is ongoing with limited hazards. A live video feed of Kīlauea's summit is available on the USGS YouTube channel, and a full timeline of recent episodes can be found on the USGS website.
