Llandrindod's Big Battle cancelled due to lack of entries

A FUN-FILLED day of events due to take place this weekend in Llandrindod Wells has been cancelled due to a lack of entries. The Big Battle 2: The Revenge, a follow-up to last year's inaugural Big Battle, was due to take place this Sunday, June 1. However, organisers Fuelled by Cake announced on Friday (May 30) that it was 'gutted' to have to cancel the event, due to a low response in terms of team entries. 'We are so sorry to say that we've taken the decision (for now) to cancel our planned Big Battle event this Sunday,' read a post on the Fuelled by Cake Facebook page on Friday morning. 'Please believe us when we say that we have tried our very best to find ways around this, and we are all gutted. 'Unfortunately, the event didn't attract enough team entries this time around, and so the decision to cancel has been based on: First and foremost, it is truly important to us that we create good quality events for those taking part. One that creates a buzz, a fun atmosphere and feels worth taking part in. 'We want to create events that people of our town want and can be involved in, alongside us. 'It is important to us to ensure that we provide value for money to those people who have supported us with funding for this event. 'We need to value the amount of time and energy that all the generous volunteers are giving as part of the planning and running of the event.' All teams that entered have been contacted and will receive a full refund. 'We are taking what we've learned from this and will be exploring an alternative option for creating a shorter half-day day event, and that possibly hooks onto an existing event in the town to make it more accessible to more people,' added organisers. 'To all those who entered or supported this in anyway whatsoever, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts, for your support and enthusiasm.' Llandrindod Community Events, which acts as co-ordinators of the Big Battle, alongside Fuelled by Cake, added its disappointment. 'Unfortunately, due to low team entries, the Big Battle has been cancelled,' it said on its Facebook page. 'It's a real shame after all the time and effort that Fuelled by Cake have put into organising and planning it for our community. 'Big thanks to everyone who supported the planning – these events only happen because people give up their time to make them work.' Last year's Big Battle was a fun-packed day of team events, culminating in an obstacle course and boat race, with the event introduced to the town last year by Fuelled by Cake and Llandrindod Community Events. This year's event was scheduled to be superhero-themed, for teams of up to 6 heroes or villains. The Big Battle includes a series of 8 challenges for you and your team to take on; some challenges are for the whole team, others for individual members. From making and flying a paper aeroplane to axe throwing, welly wanging or traversing an assault course, the array of challenges is varied. Teams receive points at each challenge station, with points building throughout the day and culminating in the final showdown – a boat race on Llandrindod Lake.

Llanrindod Wells' Chalybeate Tea Room officially opens

A NEW tea room officially opened in Llandrindod Wells with a VE Day-themed event last weekend. Opened by Jenni and Lee Percy, who also run the multi award-winning Lakeside Boathouse and Llandrindod Community Events, Chalybeate Tea Room officially opened its doors on Friday, May 9, with a celebratory event involving the community taking place on Saturday. Over 180 people attended the event, who were all treated to a free drink on entry, a fantastic barbeque, and VE-themed performances from Llandrindod Wells Theatre Company, as well as from Angharad Hyde and Phil Hill. Based in Rock Park, the tea room offers a charming and peaceful space for people to enjoy a range of premium teas and coffees, light bites and provides the perfect atmosphere for relaxing and socialising. Located in the old Pump House building, the tea room boasts many of the original features – including the water pumps which would historically draw water from the nearby spa, during the iconic period that made Llandrindod famous. 'We are absolutely delighted to bring this piece of Llandrindod's history back to life,' said Jenni. 'It's taken a lot of work from a lot of people, but seeing everyone having such a wonderful time at our opening event made it all worthwhile. 'We've already had lots of visitors, which was fantastic over this lovely spring weekend. It's great to see people enjoying this beautiful space – Rock Park provides beautiful surroundings.' Feedback from the event was hugely positive, with one local resident saying: 'Fantastic evening, from food drink entertainment and atmosphere. Looking forward to the next event.' Another described the venue and event as amazing, saying: 'Thank you for an evening of great entertainment, fantastic food, fun and laughter.' 'A wonderful evening getting the community together, thank you so much,' said another attendee. 'Such a lovely evening. A wonderful start to your new adventure, wishing you every success with this brilliant addition to the social and economic fabric of this amazing town.' The tea room offers light lunches, afternoon tea and cakes. Dog lovers can also bring their four-legged friends along to sit in a designated seating area. Jenni added: 'We're dedicated to providing a really lovely experience for people – something a bit different, something that feels like a bit of a treat, but still in keeping with our vision for accessible facilities for people in Llandrindod Wells. 'We'll be exploring events like concerts and themed evenings in the future, we're really excited at what this venue can offer.' Chalybeate is open from 10am-4pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Pay them a visit, or call 01597 243013 or email Chalybeatetearoom@ for more information.

The Big Battle 2: The Revenge, is taking place on Sunday, June 1, with heroes and villains vying for supremacy in the spa town. Arrive at Lakeside Boathouse at 10am on the day to check your team in and collect your team timetable for the day. The theme for all teams this year is 'Heroes vs Villains'.
