TenHaken's Chief of Staff to step down as term ends
SIOUX FALLS S.D. (KELO) — Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken announced his Chief of Staff Erica Beck will step away from her role this summer. Beck started in her role in June of 2018, shortly after Mayor TenHaken was sworn into office. SDSU names Bryan Petersen men's basketball head coach 'When I asked her to serve as my Chief of Staff, we had no idea the events we would encounter together. Sioux Falls does not realize how lucky they've been to have this incredible woman helping to guide our city for the past seven years,' TenHaken said in a news release. Prior to stepping into the role of Chief of Staff, Beck worked for Lloyd Companies as vice president of development. She previously worked eight years at the City of Sioux Falls as an urban planner, senior planner, and economic development manager. Beck will transition out of her role the end of June, allowing for a successful transition, a news release said. During this time, TenHaken will determine if the position will be backfilled. The Mayoral election for Sioux Falls is still undetermined. TenHaken's term will end either in June or November, according to House Bill 1130. House Bill 1130, an act to provide permissible dates for municipal and school district elections, was signed by South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden on March 25, 2025. In a recent interview with KELOLAND News, TenHaken expressed his support for June elections. The bill states that elections for municipal officers must be held 'on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June or the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.' Remembering Craig Lloyd
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – A longtime Sioux Falls developer has died. Craig Lloyd, the founder of Lloyd Companies, passed away Wednesday morning in Sioux Falls at the age of 76. From building houses in the 1970s to multimillion-dollar projects that have reshaped downtown Sioux Falls, Lloyd has made a huge impact in Sioux Falls. The Steel District is one example of his many visions coming to life. 'You're going to be looking at this thing 50 years from now and go, 'Wow who ever thought of that?' Lloyd said. Over the decades, Lloyd Companies has overseen the development of more than 10,000 apartment units, 2.8 million square feet of commercial space and more than 700 acres of land for mixed-use development. Back in 2015, Lloyd took KELO News on a tour of his YMCA Apartment project that would've been demolished if it wasn't for his efforts. 'Saving an old building. We saved this building from demo; deterioration,' Lloyd said. Aside from construction, Lloyd was someone who gave back to his community. In May 2020 at the height of the pandemic, he was seen outside, along with community members, thanking the workers at Smithfield who continued to show up. Committee sends school choice bill to 41st day 'You know these people are helping our food supply in America and we're so thankful that they come to work,' Lloyd said. Giving back was something Lloyd was no stranger to. The Minnesota State University Mankato alum is a founding sponsor of the school's Big Idea Challenge, a competition that gives funding to student's new, innovative business ideas. 'To be a dreamer you have to really go out on a limb and you gotta take that leap of faith,' Lloyd said. Chris Thorkelson, Lloyd's nephew who succeeded him in 2016 says, 'Our family, our company and the communities we serve are forever changed for the better because Craig Lloyd was part of them.' Lloyd was named the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. This award honors alumni who have enhanced the reputation of the University through their actions, hard work and achievement. Lloyd is also a member of the South Dakota Hall of Fame. Recently, Lloyd Companies donated a million dollars for a dog park at Jacobson Plaza and $750,000 for 'Lloyd Landing.'
