Giants place Patrick Bailey on injured list. Logan Porter sees first MLB action since 2023
DENVER — Logan Porter battled traffic and airport security to get to Denver, and the San Francisco Giants catcher played in his first big league game since 2023. San Francisco Giants placed Patrick Bailey on the 10-day injured list with a strained neck on Wednesday and selected the contract of Porter from Triple-A Sacramento. Porter had to scramble to get from Seattle on Wednesday morning but arrived in time for batting practice at Coors Field before Wednesday night's game against the Colorado Rockies. 'Almost missed the flight, a lot of traffic,' Porter said before the Giants earned their seventh consecutive win . 'I think I was the last one on the flight and security took an hour and half. It was a mess. 'A little overwhelming. I was like, 'All right, if I don't make it, this is going to be interesting.' But we made it.' Bailey, whose trip to the IL is retroactive to Sunday, is batting .185 with one homer and 16 RBIs this season. The Giants hoped he would be OK to back up Andrew Knizner during the series at Colorado but he didn't improve. 'It's really hard to not have a second catcher and he just didn't get that much better (Wednesday),' manager Bob Melvin said. 'Didn't feel like were in position to try to push it to (Thursday). The prudent thing to do was to IL him right now.' Bailey is the second Giants player to hit the injured list this week. Third baseman Matt Chapman was placed on the IL with a sprained right hand, suffered in Sunday's win over Atlanta . 'It seems like it comes in waves,' Melvin said. 'Everybody goes through it. Expectation doesn't change. Logan knows our guys, knows all the signs, so it's a good fit as well.' Porter pinch hit in Wednesday night's 10-7 win, his first major league game since he was with the Kansas City Royals in 2023. He hit .194 over 11 games with one homer that season. He signed a minor league contract with San Francisco on Nov. 14, 2024, and was with the team during spring training. Melvin said Porter will likely be behind the plate Thursday when Hayden Birdsong is on the mound. Porter caught the starters and relievers during the Cactus League and feels comfortable with them at the major league level. 'It should just be easy transition, and I'm familiar with the bullpen,' he said. The team also designated infielder Osleivis Basabe for assignment. He was batting .242 with four homers with Sacramento. Basabe's contract was purchased by the Giants from Tampa Bay in February. ___ AP MLB:

Giants place catcher Patrick Bailey on IL with neck strain
DENVER — Suddenly, the Giants have a mother lode of Gold Gloves on the injured list. One day after placing third baseman Matt Chapman on the IL with a sprained right hand, he was joined by catcher Patrick Bailey. The reigning National League Gold Glove catcher was a late scratch from Tuesday's game because of neck stiffness. He demonstrated little improvement after treatment Wednesday, and the Giants couldn't give him more time while lacking coverage behind the plate. Advertisement The club purchased the contract of catcher Logan Porter, who is in the big leagues for the first time since he played 11 games for the Kansas City Royals in 2023. To make room on the 40-man roster, infielder Osleivis Basabe was designated for assignment. The Giants can backdate Bailey's IL assignment to Sunday, so he'd be eligible to return as soon as June 19. Bailey underwent a precautionary MRI exam that did not show structural issues beyond a muscle strain, so the expectation is that he should be ready when eligible. For now, the Giants will have to compete without two of their most valuable defensive players. Bailey was hitting just .185 with one home run, but continued to make a positive impact as a receiver and pitch framer — skills that have been especially valuable while the team has played a stretch of eight consecutive games decided by one run. 'It's definitely something I'm extremely frustrated about,' Bailey said. 'Losing Chapman is huge, and I felt I was finally starting to take a step forward at the plate. Felt like I was starting to help the ballclub a little more there.' 'Seems like it comes in waves,' Giants manager Bob Melvin said. 'Everyone goes through them. Expectations don't change. Logan has been with us in spring training, knows our signs, knows all the guys. So it's a good fit as well.' Why Porter and not Sam Huff, who served as Bailey's backup for more than two months before the club outrighted him to Triple-A Sacramento last week? Melvin said Huff was dealing with back stiffness and hadn't played for the River Cats since being assigned to them. And Porter made a solid impression on coaches and teammates in spring training. 'He moves around a little better than a normal catcher does,' Melvins aid. 'He runs bases well. We were impressed with how he caught our guys and felt secure about him at any time bringing him up.' Advertisement Melvin said he wasn't sure how evenly split the catching position would be between Porter and Andrew Knizner, whom the club signed in May after he opted out of a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals and added to the roster last week. But Knizner has made a fast impression thus far, including on Bailey, who is a fellow North Carolina State alum. The two catchers did not overlap in college, but they've trained at the same facilities in the offseason. 'He's awesome,' Bailey said of Knizner, who was Gold Glove catcher Yadier Molina's backup during four of his five seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals. 'He plays with a lot of energy. He played with Yadi for a while. He has a really good understanding of the game, and he's just a big personality.' The injury news was better on the pitching front. Right-hander Justin Verlander (pectoral strain) threw a 65-pitch live batting practice session and impressed Melvin while facing Jerar Encarnacion, Christian Koss and Daniel Johnson. If Verlander feels good after another side session, he could return to the rotation next week against the Cleveland Guardians. Left-hander Kyle Harrison would appear to be the most obvious candidate to get bumped to the bullpen, although he's performed well since rejoining the rotation.
