The CDC issued warnings after at least ten people were hospitalised. The outbreak has resulted in a recall of more than 80 ready-to-eat items in four states. California and Nevada were home to those who became ill and were admitted to hospitals.
Fresh & Ready Foods LLC manufactured the goods, which were marketed in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington.
Live Events
According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the outbreak has been simmering for several months, with cases beginning in December 2023. It infects about 1,600 people annually in the United States, and 260 of them die, as per a report.
How does listeria spread and survive?
The bacteria that cause listeria poisoning thrive in cold environments and can cause serious illness, particularly among vulnerable populations.
Listeria bacteria flourish and are carried by certain animals in moist environments, such as soil, water, and decomposing vegetation.
Food that has been harvested, processed, transported, or stored in environments contaminated with the bacteria is usually the source of the sturdy germs.
People over 65, individuals with compromised immune systems, pregnant women, and the very young are the groups most at risk of being ill.
Which food items are being recalled?
Over 80 specific products that were distributed between April 18 and April 25 are included in the voluntary recall. "Use By" dates for the products range from April 22 to May 19.
Fresh & Ready Foods, Fresh Take Crave Away, and City Point Market Fresh Food to Go are among the brands that have manufactured these items. According to federal officials, anyone in possession of the products should return or discard them.
It's critical to clean and sanitise all surfaces that may have come into contact with the products, such as refrigerator drawers and shelves, because listeria can thrive in a refrigerator.
What symptoms should you watch for after exposure?
The symptoms, which can be mild, include diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, muscle aches, and nausea. Severe headaches, stiff necks, disorientation, dizziness, and seizures are signs of more serious illnesses.
Detecting listeria, however, is not an easy task. The bacteria can make people sick when they eat contaminated food.
Listeria poisoning is challenging because symptoms may appear hours or days after consuming tainted food. However, they can also take weeks or even three months to appear.
Can heating the food items prevent listeria infection?
The bacteria can be difficult to remove once they enter a food processing facility. Since listeria thrives in cold environments, food that has been chilled can harbour and proliferate listeria.
The CDC states that heating food to 165 degrees Fahrenheit (74 degrees Celsius), or "steaming hot," can destroy it. But for items that are meant to be consumed cold, that isn't always feasible, as quoted in a report by The AP.
