BMC earns 7.5cr from event rentals on racecourse land
Mumbai: Since BMC took over 120 acres of Mahalaxmi Racecourse land in July 2024, it has earned Rs 7.5 crore in revenue by renting it out for events. The past year saw several international events take place at the racecourse, including Lollapalooza India last March, the Guns N' Roses concert in May, and international equestrian events in Feb. According to the rental policy, organisers charge a base fee of Rs 50 lakh for three days, with additional days costing Rs 12.5 lakh. BMC took possession of this land on an "as is where is" basis on July 2, 2024. According to a BMC document, the acquisition was carried out to develop an international-standard central public park on the lines of New York's Central Park and major open spaces in London. Of the total 212.7-acre racecourse plot, 120.1 acres or 4,86,108.39 sq m are now with BMC. The remaining 92.6 acres have been leased back to the Royal Western India Turf Club Ltd for 30 years — from June 1, 2023, to May 31, 2053, subject to specific terms, usage conditions, and permissions. Officials also told TOI that BMC finalised a design plan for developing the racecourse land into a hybrid public park and events space, which will soon be presented to the chief minister. Last year, BMC enlisted architect Hafeez Contractor to conceptualise the transformation of the 120-acre racecourse land into a central public park with green spaces, walking decks, and cycling tracks. For BMC too, this is helping to generate revenue," said an official. Civic sources said the development of this space may be handed to Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), which has already been given the contract for the development of the Mumbai Coastal Road open spaces and to connect both — the racecourse and coastal road open spaces — via a pedestrian subway. "RIL has been given the open space for development with BMC not bearing the cost for it," said an official.
