Kane Williamson unlikely for Black Caps' Zimbabwe tour
Former Black Caps captain Kane Williamson is unlikely to tour Zimbabwe for a two-test series starting in July, after opting out of a central contract for a second year running. However, he says he will continue to be available for the national team without being obliged to play, adding that he is still passionate about playing for his country. Williamson has arrived in London for a stint with Middlesex in the County Championship and the T20 Blast, and with London Spirit in The Hundred. He will be play in at least 10 T20 matches and five County Championship matches, through to September. Black Caps coach Gary Stead has indicated he doesn't expect Williamson to be available for the Zimbabwe tests — in Bulawayo, starting on July 30 and August 7, following seven T20 matches in Harare. In interviews on his arrival at Middlesex, Williamson has indicated that spending time his family with will be his priority outside of his cricket commitments. His wife Sarah, who is English, and their three children are with him in England. ADVERTISEMENT "It worked well last year, and obviously I'm in close conversations with New Zealand cricket, and the relationship is strong, but the landscape's changing really fast." he told The Guardian. The situation of not being on a central contract was still evolving for both parties, he said. "Yeah, we're still learning how to do it," he says. "The landscape keeps changing with the different challenges that we're presented with as cricketers. It's a work in progress. But New Zealand Cricket have been great to work with on it, I've been fortunate with that." Williamson opted out of some Black Caps series in the past year, including the tours of Bangladesh and India. The 34-year-old said he had done reflective thinking following the retirement from test cricket of India star Virat Kohli. The pair, Joe Root and Steve Smith were once dubbed the "Fab Four'' by the late Martin Crowe in an ESPN Cricinfo article. "My first thought was 'oh gosh, there's an end point'," Williamson said. "Because before that, you're on the journey, there's a pursuit there. And it's not connected to those other three, but we've all been playing at the same time, and we've all competed against each other for a long time and we all know each other pretty well. So then you do start to reflect a little bit. Heather Knight ruled out of England's summer with hamstring injury
England batter Heather Knight is hoping to be fit for the World Cup after being ruled out of the rest of the international summer with a hamstring tendon injury. Knight top-scored as England completed a T20 series clean sweep against the West Indies on Monday, but her unbeaten 66 from 47 balls came at a cost as she was unable to field due to injury. The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed on Thursday she had sustained a 'significant tendon injury' in her right hamstring, meaning she will miss the three one-day games against the West Indies and the upcoming series against India. Knight will also be absent for the London Spirit's title defence in this season's Hundred. However, the ECB is hopeful the former England captain will be available for this year's World Cup in India which is scheduled to start in September. A statement from the ECB said: 'An MRI scan has revealed that Heather Knight has suffered a significant tendon injury to her right hamstring and will be ruled out of home international cricket and the Hundred in 2025. Heather Knight ruled out of summer in huge blow for England ahead of World Cup
Former England captain Heather Knight will miss the remainder of the summer after suffering a severe hamstring injury in a huge blow for Charlotte Edwards' side. Knight suffered the problem while compiling a half century as England completed a 3-0 sweep of the T20 international series against the West Indies at Chelmsford on Monday. Subsequent scans have revealed a 'significant tendon injury' that will sideline the 34-year-old for June, July and August, though it is hoped she will be fit for the Cricket World Cup, which begins at the end of September. Alice Capsey has been called up to England's one-day international squad ahead of three more white-ball encounters with the West Indies that begin in Derby on Friday. Knight lost the captaincy after a disastrous 16-0 Ashes whitewash in the winter but underlined her importance with two excellent knocks from No 4 in the T20 series. An unbeaten 43 in the successful chase at Canterbury was followed by her 66 not out in Chelmsford, with the former skipper leaving a significant hole in the middle order. "Her innings was pretty special to get us up to that total, being a competitive and winning score in the end," said captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, of Knight's knock. "That just shows her class and experience." England take on India later in the summer, while Knight will also miss The Hundred having captained the London Spirit to the title last year. Surrey all-rounder Alice Davidson-Richards and Lancashire opener Emma Lamb are among those who could press for a place alongside Capsey after being included in the ODI squad.
