Historic College Football Rivalry Gets Major Update
All eyes will be on the Texas Longhorns in 2025 as they attempt to reach their third consecutive College Football Playoff. Texas will enter the season as one of the highest ranked teams in the country. While several starters from last year departed for the NFL, the Longhorns are confident in the many new faces poised to break out in 2025. Advertisement Quarterback Arch Manning is preparing for his first season as the full-time starter and the hype surrounding him is at an all-time high. Steve Sarkisian's staff also landed a few immediate impact starters via the transfer portal, including former Cal tight end Jack Endris. While all eyes will be on the Longhorns to see if they can live up to the hype, many Texas players have one primary game in mind. Texas A&M will be traveling to Austin in November to face Texas. On Thursday, schedule details were released for this historic Lone Star Showdown. The Longhorns will host the Aggies on Friday, Nov. 28 at 6:30 p.m. CT. This is a slight change from last season where the two teams played on Saturday. However, many fans are ecstatic that the game will be on Friday as it was typically always played on the day after Thanksgiving in the past. This matchup will also mark the first time that the Aggies will travel to Austin for a college football game since 2010. It has the potential to break an attendance record. Advertisement The Longhorns defeated the Aggies at Kyle Field last season, 17-7. Texas will likely enter the matchup as the favorite, but we're all aware that anything can happen in rivalry games. For now, fans can rejoice in the game taking place on Friday evening. Related: Where Each Longhorn Was Drafted or Signed Following the 2025 NFL Draft

Texas clinches Lone Star Showdown trophy for the 2024-25 school year over Texas A&M
Texas clinches Lone Star Showdown trophy for the 2024-25 school year over Texas A&M Texas has clinched the Cotton Lone Star Showdown trophy. The University of Texas Longhorns have clinched the 2024-25 Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown trophy, marking their seventh win in the rivalry series against Texas A&M. The annual competition, which includes all varsity men's and women's athletic events, was reimagined as the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown prior to the current season. The Longhorns secured an 11-5 lead in the point standings following a baseball series sweep over the weekend. With only 2 points left to be decided in men's and women's outdoor track and field at the SEC Championships on May 15-17, Texas has an insurmountable lead. The Lone Star Showdown began before the 2004-05 season and lasted until 2011-12. It was brought back as the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown for the 2024-25 season. Texas has now won the Lone Star Showdown in 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12, and Holdings sponsors all head-to-head sports contests between Texas and Texas A&M in Austin and College Station. They also sponsor the year-long scoring system that determines the annual Lone Star Showdown rivalry series trophy winner. The history between the Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies began in 1894 with football. In 2011, Texas A&M joined the Southeastern Conference, which ended the schools' 118-year consecutive meetings. To continue the rivalry in other sports, the Lone Star Showdown was created in 2004. Each winner of a head-to-head matchup gets a point, and the school with the most points at the end of the year wins the series and the Lone Star Trophy.

Texas A&M drops Game 1 in the Lone Star Showdown after falling 2-1 to No. 1 Texas
Texas A&M drops Game 1 in the Lone Star Showdown after falling 2-1 to No. 1 Texas The Texas A&M (24-17, 8-11 SEC) falls in game one of the Cotton Holding Lone Star Showdown, losing 2-1 to No. 1 Texas (35-5, 17-2 SEC) on the road in Austin. It was a game dominated by pitching, with both teams struggling to generate offense until the later innings. Aggie starter Ryan Prager delivered one of his strongest performances in recent memory, holding the opposition scoreless through 5.2 innings. However, the Aggies' offense faltered, reverting to old habits of chasing pitches outside the zone. The clutch hitting that had been a hallmark of their recent success was notably absent. The matchup may have played a role, as the Aggies have historically struggled against left-handed pitchers, a trend that continued tonight. Ben Royo was the lone bright spot, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. Unfortunately, the rest of the lineup was plagued by weak groundouts and double plays. Even when they made solid contact, the balls fell short of clearing the fence, resulting in easy outs. Their sole run came in an unusual fashion, a towering infield single by Wyatt Henseler that was misplayed by the first baseman, allowing Royo to score. It was a tough night for the Aggies, but performances like Prager's and Royo's offer some positives to build on. The Aggies will get a chance to even up the series on Saturday evening when they the Longhorns in Game 2 at 3:00 p.m. CT.
