Hornell's Bill Pullman returning to Lone Starr role for 'Spaceballs' sequel: Report
The "Schwartz" is still strong with Bill Pullman. The 71-year-old Hornell native and Hollywood star has signed on to reprise one of his earliest and most iconic big screen roles – the Han Solo-esque Lone Starr in a sequel to the 1987 comedy spoof 'Spaceballs.' Amazon MGM Studios announced in a June 12 release the legendary Mel Brooks, 98, will return as Yogurt, the keeper of the power known as The Schwartz in the 'Star Wars' parody, which became a cult classic. Following the Amazon MGM Studios announcement, Deadline reported both Pullman and Rick Moranis, who starred as the Darth Vader-wannabe Dark Helmet in the film, are returning for the sequel. The late John Candy had a memorable turn in the original movie as Lone Starr's hilarious sidekick, half-man, half-dog, Barf. There's been no word from the movie team on how Barf's character will be handled, but it's difficult to imagine anyone filling Candy's barking performance. The film will be directed by Josh Greenbaum from a script by "Frozen" star Josh Gad (also a producer), Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, according to Amazon MGM. The film is scheduled to hit movie theaters in 2027. Plot details are currently under wraps. Pullman has built an impressive film and television career since being cast as the reluctant space hero, only his second role in a feature film after 1986's "Ruthless People." Pullman's notable screen credits include "While You Were Sleeping," "Independence Day," "The Accidental Tourist," and "Casper." On the small screen, Pullman has starred over three seasons as Detective Harry Ambrose in the critically acclaimed series "The Sinner." Create Account The beloved 1987 Star Wars spoof featured the 72-year-old SCTV alum as the bumbling Dark Helmet alongside Mel Brooks' President Skroob as they attempt to steal the air supply of the peaceful planet Druidia by kidnapping Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga). The pair are thwarted in their attempts by Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his sidekick Barf (the late John Candy). Alongside Brooks, Pullman will return in his role of Lone Starr with his son Lewis, Keke Palmer and Josh Gad also joining the cast. According to Deadline, the film has been described as 'A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.' Brooks officially announced the film on X , alongside a Star Wars -like opening crawl that poked fun at the incessant number of remakes and prequels that have been churned out by Hollywood over the past 40 years. Sharing Brooks' social media post, Gad wrote on Instagram , 'I was that child who saw 'Spaceballs' before I ever saw 'Star Wars' and then wondered why anyone would do a dramatic remake of the Mel Brooks classic. It is therefore the greatest gift of my life to now help take the reins and work alongside Mel and this incredible group to do a sequel to the movie that first inspired George Lucas . 🪐🏐🎾🏀.' In an interview with Forbes last year, Gad, who co-wrote the script with Josh Greenbaum, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, said that Brooks 'has been so unbelievably supportive' of his sequel plans. 'It's a dream to be able to finally make the reality prophesied by Yogurt in the first movie happen. I can't say more than that,' Gad said. 'I can't tell you anything beyond (the) process at this point, but I can tell you every hour of every day right now is spent making this project closer and closer to reality — and I think we're nearing the end zone here.' After last appearing in 1997's straight-to-DVD Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves , Moranis stepped away from Hollywood to raise his two kids following his wife's death in 1991. But he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2015 that he wasn't retired. 'I took a break, which turned into a longer break,' Moranis told the outlet at the time. 'But I'm interested in anything that I would find interesting. I still get the occasional query about a film or television role, and as soon as one comes along that piques my interest.' In 2020, Moranis was slated to star opposite Gad in Shrunk , a reboot to 1989's Honey, I Shrunk the Kids , but the project was sidelined. 'A lot of u ask me what's going on with this film,' Gad wrote on Twitter in 2023. 'Truth is, we were inches from starting and then COVID hit, inches from starting again & then my schedule exploded with conflicts, inches from starting again & budget got the best of us.' He then encouraged followers to keep pushing for a sequel. 'If you want it, let your local @disney know,' he wrote. mdaniell@ Read More Canada Toronto Maple Leafs Toronto Maple Leafs Toronto & GTA Columnists

SPACEBALLS 2: Lewis Pullman to Join Father Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga as Queen Vespa Returns — GeekTyrant
Get ready to jam it into ludicrous speed, Spaceballs 2 , the next generation of Lone Starrs is on deck. Lewis Pullman is in talks to join the cast of the long-awaited sequel to Mel Brooks' cult classic Spaceballs , reuniting with his real-life dad, Bill Pullman, who will once again don the vest of Lone Starr. And yes, Daphne Zuniga is also expected to return as the ever-iconic Queen Vespa. For fans of the original 1987 film, this sequel has been a decades-long joke made real, and now, it's happening with family ties front and center. Lewis Pullman, who's built a strong résumé with projects like Top Gun: Maverick , Marvel's Thunderbolts* , and his role in Lessons in Chemistry , is set to play 'Starburst,' the offspring of Lone Starr and Queen Vespa. It's a clever move that keeps the DNA of the original intact while launching a new generation of space parody. Pullman originally kept his career path independent of his father's legacy, but recently opened up about how that perspective has shifted: 'For a long time, I was like, 'I'm gonna do this on my own,' and was very stubborn. And I'm so glad that I got over whatever that was because now it's such a gift to be able to share different experiences with my dad and get advice from him.' Joining the cast is Keke Palmer in a key role named Destiny. Though details are still under wraps, she and Lewis Pullman will headline the film alongside Josh Gad, who co-wrote the script with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Gad is also producing, and Mel Brooks returns as Yogurt, which is just the kind of beautiful continuity we needed in this galaxy of franchise chaos. On top pf that Rick Moranis will be back as Darth Helmet, which is the most exciting news! Amazon MGM Studios is producing the film and aiming for a 2027 theatrical release, and while the plot remains locked away, the studio's tongue-in-cheek description gives fans a good idea of what to expect: 'A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two' but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.' Josh Greenbaum ( Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar ) will direct, with Imagine's Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody producing alongside Gad, Brooks, and Greenbaum. Executive producers include Kevin Slater, Adam Merims, and the screenwriting duo Samit and Hernandez. Spaceballs 2 is shaping up to be more than what I was hoping for! Source: THR
