Long Tiger gets 12 years' jail, 5 strokes of rotan for raping married woman

Hamim Hamid was accused of raping a woman in a house in Taman Sri Jaya, Bukit Gambir, Tangkak, Johor, between 1pm and 2.05pm on Sept 26, 2019. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Hamim Hamid, a Rohingya man notoriously known as 'Long Tiger', was sentenced by the court today to 12 years' imprisonment and five strokes of the rotan for raping a married woman in 2019. Harian Metro reported that Muar sessions court judge Irwan Suainbon pronounced the sentence on the 36-year-old after the court ruled that he had failed to raise a reasonable doubt to the prosecution's case. Irwan said the accused's defence to the charge was merely a bare denial. 'The defence presented by the accused also failed to refute the prosecution's prima facie case. 'The court has determined that the prosecution has successfully proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. 'The court also found that the statement from the accused's wife, who was the 11th defence witness, was a fabrication and cannot be believed,' he said. Hamim was accused of raping a married woman, who was 19 years old at the time, in a house in Taman Sri Jaya, Bukit Gambir, Tangkak, Johor, between 1pm and 2.05pm on Sept 26, 2019. He was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code with rape, which provides for up to 20 years' imprisonment and a whipping upon conviction. Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Arif Marzuki asked the court to consider the public interest, the seriousness of the crime, and the trauma inflicted when sentencing. 'It is even more appalling that the victim had just suffered a miscarriage a few days prior to the rape,' he said. The court said Hamim's jail sentence would run from the date of his arrest on Aug 7, 2021. He is currently serving another four-year sentence for extortion by threat of accusation of an offence, under Section 388 of the Penal Code. The Tangkak magistrates' court also sentenced him to 12 months' imprisonment on Jan 20, 2022, for escaping custody on Dec 15, 2021. He was charged under Section 224 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to two years' imprisonment, a fine or both.

'Long Tiger' jailed 12 years for raping married woman

MUAR: A man popularly known as "Long Tiger" has been sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment and five strokes of the rotan by the Sessions Court for raping a married woman four years ago. Judge Irwan Suainbon handed Long Tiger, also known as Abdul Hamim Ab Hamid, his sentence after finding him guilty, following the defence's failure to raise reasonable doubt in the Rohingya man's case. In his judgment, Irwan said the court found that the accused's defence amounted to a mere denial. "Furthermore, the defence presented by the accused could not refute the prosecution's prima facie case. "In addition, the court found that the testimony from the accused's wife, a defence witness, was largely fabricated and not credible," he said. According to the charge, Hamim was accused of raping a 19-year-old woman at a house in Taman Sri Jaya, Bukit Gambir, Tangkak, between 1pm and 2.05pm on Sept 26, 2019. He was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code for rape, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years' imprisonment and whipping upon conviction. Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhamad Arif Marzuki urged the court to consider public interest and the seriousness of the offence, which had caused trauma to the victim. "It is even more appalling that the accused raped the victim, who had just suffered a miscarriage a few days prior. The victim was his employee, and he dared to treat her in such a manner," he said. During proceedings, the court ruled that Hamim's prison sentence would take effect from the date of his arrest, Aug 7, 2021. He is currently serving a separate four-year sentence for extortion, which must be completed first. Outside the court, Hamim threatened journalists who were taking his photo. "If you take my picture, I'll throw my slipper," he said.
