Google Is Getting Into the Movie Business to Produce Pro-Tech Propaganda
Big tech has a big public opinion problem. Years of political controversy and privacy invasions have left people feeling hostile toward the industry, no matter what side of the aisle they fall on. Maybe a little boost from Tinseltown would help? That seems to be what Google's thinking as it has struck up a multi-year partnership with Range Media Partners (producers of 'Longlegs' and 'A Complete Unknown') on a new film and TV production venture called 100 Zeros. The initiative is tasked with finding scripted and unscripted projects for Google to help fund or produce. Business Insider reports that Google's ultimate aim is to encourage creatives to adopt its new technologies, like its Immersive View feature, which lets users see things in 3D in Maps; spatial tools that blend the real and virtual worlds; and AI. More significantly, the company is also hoping to promote positive opinions of its products, especially among young people, by creating its own pieces of entertainment and popular culture. To this end, 100 Zeros quietly contributed some marketing dollars to Neon's 'Cuckoo,' an indie horror film starring Hunter Schaefer, last year. 100 Zeros's logo was featured on-screen during the movie's opening credits, but Google sought no publicity for the spend. In April, Google announced another project with Range: 'AI on Film,' a program to commission short films that explore the relationship between humanity and AI. The companies committed to spending the next 18 months developing, financing, and producing these shorts, with the ultimate goal of greenlighting two into feature-length adaptations. At the time, Mira Lane, then the Sr. Director of Technology and Society at Google, explained the venture to Variety, saying, '…as AI moves out of the realm of science fiction and into our everyday lives, narrative films present an opportunity to explore and showcase the ways we want to coexist with this technology.' According to LinkedIn, Lane has since been promoted to VP of technology and society at Google, and her work is focused on the way the company can 'combat a deluge of dystopian narratives' brought on by the development of intelligence. Talent firm and production company Range Media was founded in 2022 by Peter Micelli and Jack Whigham, two veterans of powerhouse agency CAA. Range's roster of clients includes director Michael Bay, actor Bradley Cooper, and athlete and content creator Ilona Maher. Notably, CAA filed suit against Range Media in 2024, accusing the company of stealing confidential information from CAA via its assistants and other employees it was in the process of poaching. (This is a movie I would watch!) It also alleges that Range Media skirts California law and Writers Guild of America requirements by acting as a talent agency, but calling itself a management company. In doing so, CAA claims that the company can profit from transactions not available to 'law-abiding talent agencies.' In January, Range Media won a pause in litigation.

Nicholas Cage Says He Got ‘Stuck in the Rip Tide' and ‘Could Have Died' While Training for ‘The Surfer': ‘I've Been Pounded to Smithereens'
Nicholas Cage nearly came face-to-face with a shark while training for a role in his new psychological thriller 'The Surfer.' The film, now in theaters, stars Cage as a nameless businessman who attempts to buy back his childhood home in Australia, only to find the property is protected by a gang of mysterious bullies who quickly make his life a living nightmare. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about his preparations for the film, Cage said his surfing lessons ended up more dangerous than anticipated. More from Variety Nicolas Cage, Colman Domingo and June Squibb Among Newport Beach Film Festival Honorees 'Longlegs' Crosses $100 Million at Box Office to Become 2024's Highest-Grossing Indie Film Nicolas Cage's Psychological Thriller 'The Surfer' Sells to Lionsgate, Roadside Attractions After Cannes Premiere 'We had things like weather conditions and believe it or not, shark reports and things, all that shit. I have surfed, but every time I've attempted surfing, I've been pounded to smithereens,' Cage revealed. 'I surfed down on Sunset Beach. When I was trying to learn, my teacher gave me a shortboard. I said, 'Look, I want a longboard.'' But even with a longboard, the waves still got the best of Cage. 'I just got pounded and literally got stuck in the rip tide, and they said they saw my board, they call it 'tombstone,' like that triangle top,' he says, pantomiming the tip of his board sticking straight up out of the water.' 'I'm climbing up the leash as I'm somersaulting, and I could have died,' Cage added. 'Now I have a young kid, I don't know if I want to do it anymore.' Cage's character in 'The Surfer' doesn't fare much better: the film, directed by Lorcan Finnegan and written by Thomas Martin, sees the eponymous surfer driven to madness when bullies insist he can't buy or surf at his childhood home. Though his Cage may not have been a natural surfer, he says he hasn't ruled out giving it another go. 'The goal is to retire, surf, drink red wine, and eat spaghetti.' ‘Together' Trailer Promises Neon's Next Horror Phenomenon
Ready to get 'Together?' The film, which premiered earlier this year in the midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival, places real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie in a body-horror scenario. It has brand-new teaser trailer out Wednesday, which you can watch below (if you dare). Written and directed by Australian filmmaker Michael Shanks and produced by Brie and Franco, among others, the movie was a sensation when it premiered at Sundance and kicked off a bidding war, with A24, Apple TV+ and Focus Features among the potential distributors. Ultimately, Neon won the worldwide distribution rights to the film for a whopping $17 million. It was the first major sale at this year's sleepy Sundance and made the movie even buzzier. The trailer doesn't give much away, but the film is said to be a gooey metaphor for codependency, which you can totally get. The official synopsis reads: 'Years into their relationship, Tim and Millie (Franco and Brie) find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the country, abandoning all that is familiar in their lives except each other. With tensions already flaring, a nightmarish encounter with a mysterious, unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love and their flesh.' Sounds good to us! 'Together' is the latest horror film from Neon, following last year's sleeper smash 'Longlegs' from director Osgood Perkins and this year's 'The Monkey,' also from Perkins, which, fueled by word-of-mouth, just crossed the $50 million-threshold. Other recent, Neon-distributed horror favorites include the Sydney Sweeney-led 'Immaculate,' last year's wonderful 'Cuckoo,' Brandon Cronenberg's 'Infinity Pool' and Steven Soderbergh's 'Presence,' which Neon released earlier this year (and really is great). 'Together' opens on Aug. 1. The post 'Together' Trailer Promises Neon's Next Horror Phenomenon appeared first on TheWrap.
