Kansas man killed when van crashes on I-40 in Texas Panhandle
A Kansas man was killed when a van crashed early Monday on Interstate 40 in Oldham County.
Lonny Wayman, 57, of Arkansas City, Kansas, was identified as the driver killed when his van veered off I‑40 Monday morning in Oldham County, according to a statement from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
At 9:07 a.m. Monday, officers responded to the scene about 5.6 miles east of Vega after reports that a vehicle had left the roadway. A preliminary investigation indicates the 2021 Ram 3500 Promaster, traveling westbound, departed from the north side of the highway for reasons still under investigation. The van struck several fences along the westbound lanes before coming to rest in a field.
Officials confirmed that Wayman was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, but they have not yet determined what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
No other injuries were reported. The highway, which has a posted speed limit of 75 mph, was dry under clear skies when the incident occurred.
The Texas Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
