Josh Shapiro details Passover arson attack, condemns political violence
HARRISBURG, Pa. — Josh Shapiro jolted awake. Someone was pounding on his door, screaming that he and his family needed to get out. 'Governor, get up. Get up. There's a fire. First lady, let's go,' an officer yelled. Police hurried Shapiro, his wife, Lori, their children and their dogs down a back staircase as firefighters rushed inside. The air was damp and cool. The Shapiros huddled outside the Governor's Residence in the clothes they slept in. As they waited, Shapiro wondered if perhaps a candle they'd lit for their Passover seder the previous evening had caused the inferno inside a dining room in the governor's mansion

Gov. Shapiro hosts reception with former governors to benefit residence restoration
Gov. Josh Shapiro and First Lady Lori Shapiro hosted former governors and first families at the Governor's Residence on Monday. The reception was held to support ongoing efforts to rebuild and restore the historic home damaged in an arson attack in April while the governor, his wife, his children and another family were all sleeping inside. Investigators say Cody Balmer, 38, of Dauphin County, hopped a seven-foot-tall fence, broke a window and threw a Molotov cocktail inside the residence. He then broke a second window, entered the residence and threw another Molotov cocktail. Gov. Josh Shapiro and First Lady Lori Shapiro were joined by all five living former governors and first ladies, as well as members of the Thornburg and Casey families. 'In the wake of the arson at the Governor's Residence, we've been uplifted by the support of former Governors, First Ladies, and First Families,' a joint statement from Gov. Josh Shapiro and First Lady Lori Shapiro said. 'We're proud to take up the baton from those who came before us and carry it forward – and as we gathered last night, we pledged to support the Residence together for generations to come.' Mark Campbell, former Chief of Staff to Governors Ridge and Schweiker, said he was proud to see all the governors stand together, committing to rebuilding and restoring the residence. 'All of us feel privileged to be members of the small group of people who have had the honor of serving Pennsylvania from the executive branch, and we wanted to be there to support the Shapiro family and staff after the heartbreaking attack on this historic home,' he said. The reception benefited the Governor's Residence Preservation Fund. Crews are working 'around the clock' to restore the State Dining Room and State Reception Room, which were both significantly damaged in the fire. The Shapiros hope the damaged areas with reopen to the public this summer. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts. Follow Channel 11 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch WPXI NOW

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro joins Broad Street Run spectators to cheer on first lady, daughter
About 40,000 runners from across the region, including members of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro's family, participated in the 46th annual Broad Street Run Sunday morning. The 10-mile race began near Jefferson Einstein Medical Center in North Philadelphia and ended at the Navy Yard, near the confluence of the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers. Shapiro and his two sons hung out at the finish line to cheer on first lady Lori Shapiro and their daughter, Sophia Shapiro. "After we got elected governor, Lori said, 'Man, I want to do something different. I want to try something new,' and she got into running!" Shapiro recalled. "A few months later, she said, 'I want to do Broad Street.' I'm like, 'You go! That's awesome!'" Lori and Sophia Shapiro said stopping at every fluid station along the course helped get them to the finish line. "We're feeling great!" Lori Shapiro said. "It was fun! Really fun!" Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro greeted First Lady Lori Shapiro and their daughter Sophia after they ran the 10-mile Broad Street Run. Today @CBSPhiladelphia at 6 pm, we'll tell you some of the reasons that motivated runners to wake up early to run 10 miles! — Brandon Goldner (@GoldnerTV) May 4, 2025 Mark Manila, a Norristown resident, ran down Broad Street to raise money for the American Cancer Society after his mother died five years ago from pancreatic cancer. "This race, really out of all the ones that I've ran, is probably the most special because I really did this one with purpose for her," Manila said. "Five years ago, you know, you didn't think that same way. It's when you lose somebody that, you know, things really change, so I'm just really proud to be running for her and with a purpose, and it's kind of taken on a whole new meaning." This year's race was different because organizers moved the start time up by a half-hour to 7 a.m., but Commissioner Susan Slawson, who runs Philadelphia's Parks and Recreation Department, said the earlier start time didn't stop runners from signing up. "It's one of those races that everyone loves," Slawson said. "We love the fact that people come here to celebrate not just the running, but also Philadelphia."

Shapiro addresses whether annual Easter egg roll will happen outside fire-damaged governor's residence
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — It'll be different, but it'll happen. That's what Governor Josh Shapiro (D), speaking Thursday after thanking firefighters who helped save his family by serving them lunch, said about the annual Easter egg roll at the governor's residence, which is scheduled for Tuesday. Shapiro said he and first lady Lori Shapiro — who toured the damaged residence earlier in the day — want things to return as close to normal as possible, as soon as possible, even though they recognize those will all be relative terms. 'The Easter egg roll is scheduled, and we're both insisting upon it happening,' said Josh Shapiro, standing next to Lori Shapiro. 'We want to welcome children and families from all across Pennsylvania back to the governor's residence. Obviously it'll take some time before we can have them in the state dining room, but we're going to work to get that prepared real quick. We're going right back in there.'
