Postal voters needing to renew to be contacted by Bradford Council

Postal voters in the Bradford district may need to reapply to continue voting by post in future elections. This follows changes introduced by the Elections Act 2022, which require postal voters to reapply every three years. All postal voters who completed an application before October 31, 2023, will be required to renew their postal vote application no later than January 31, 2026. There are no scheduled elections in Bradford until May 2026. Nevertheless, Bradford Council is contacting all affected postal voters in the district directly, by email or by post, informing them of the new rules and encouraging them to reapply as soon as possible ahead of the deadline. Dr Lorraine O'Donnell, electoral registration and returning officer for Bradford district, said: "Please help us by responding to our request for information as soon as possible." The quickest way to renew is online at All applications must include the applicant's name, address, date of birth, national insurance number, and signature. Their identity will be verified against records held by the Department for Work and Pensions. If this check fails, the applicant must provide further evidence of their identity. The next scheduled local government elections in Bradford are on Thursday, May 7, 2026.

Bradford Council making 'good progress' on finances

An independent review of Bradford Council's finances has said the authority has made "good progress" – but financial pressure is "likely to be in play for a number of years".Last year the government agreed "exceptional financial support" for the council, meaning the authority can borrow money to fund its came at a time when the council faced bankruptcy due to its huge budget part of this process, the Chartered Institute for Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) carried out a review of the council's finances, and issued a "best value notice". This notice meant there were concerns with how the authority was operating and required Bradford Council to act "to assure the government that the authority is making arrangements to secure continuous improvement".The Local Democracy Reporting Service reported that this notice has been lifted following the latest inspection by report said: "The council has made good progress towards the key recommendations and the addressing of key risks since the 2023 review."
