6 hurt when armed carjacking suspect crashes with kids inside car

A brief police chase ended in a crash that left six people injured and led to two people being detained in Inglewood on Tuesday morning. According to the Culver City Police Department, officers were attempting to take an armed carjacking suspect into custody in Inglewood when he fled, but not recklessly or at a high speed. 'However, it appears he ran a red light and collided with another vehicle,' Culver City police said, adding that, in addition to the suspect, there was a woman and two children in the vehicle. 'The pursuit only lasted a couple of minutes.' None of the injuries sustained in the crash were considered to be life-threatening, authorities said. The Los Angeles County Fire Department told KTLA that firefighters arrived at the scene within four minutes of the crash, which occurred around 10:12 a.m. near the intersection of Centinela and La Brea avenues, and were assessing six patients. Video from the Citizen App shows that debris was left scattered in the intersection in the aftermath of the crash. One of the cars involved, a white BMW sedan, sustained damage to its front end. Another involved vehicle, a silver Acura SUV, appeared to have ended up on the sidewalk as a result of the collision, according to the Citizen App footage. A user captured footage of the two people being detained at gunpoint by police. The same user's footage also showed first responders taking the two injured children from the vehicle and assessing them for injuries. Nidia Becerra contributed to this report. Overturned Castaic Lake paddleboarder identified but still missing

Authorities have identified a paddleboarder who overturned amid strong winds on Castaic Lake Sunday afternoon, prompting an ongoing search. Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the 32000 block of Castaic Lake Drive after receiving reports that a man and a woman had flipped over in the lake's lower lagoon area. The woman, who was wearing a life jacket, was quickly pulled out of the water to safety, but her companion was not seen after the incident. He was identified as 61-year-old Espiridion Philip 'Speedy' Camez by the L.A. County Sheriff's Department on Monday. Camez was described as 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing about 210 pounds. He has hazel eyes and was last seen wearing a black tank top, blue shorts and white water shoes. Footage of the incident posted to the Citizen App showed onlookers, as well as first responders, scanning the lake as rescue crews conducted their search on Sunday. A Sheriff's Department helicopter was also circling the lake, looking for signs of the missing man. Officials on Monday said that the call initially came out as a missing kayaker, but investigators discovered it was a paddleboarder after arriving at the scene. The Sheriff's Department also confirmed Monday that Camez remained missing. Anyone with further information was encouraged to contact the Sheriff's Department's Missing Persons Detail at 323-890-5500. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Inmate recaptured after brief escape from L.A. County firefighting camp

An inmate who walked away from an L.A. County firefighting camp was recaptured hours later, the second such incident in California in the last week, the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Monday. The 33-year-old inmate, Angel Gaxiola, was discovered missing by the staff during a head count at Holton Conservation Camp, which is in the mountains northeast of Sylmar, about 9 p.m. Sunday, the department said. A call went out to local law enforcement, and about 8 a.m. Monday, the Upland police apprehended Gaxiola, the department said. Prison officials did not say where Gaxiola was arrested, but Sylmar is about 50 miles from Upland. Gaxiola, who was serving a six-year sentence for robbery, had been at Holton Conservation Camp since January. The fire camp is jointly operated by the Los Angeles County Fire Department and state prison officials and is staffed by county firefighters and corrections personnel who supervise incarcerated fire crews. The crews at Holton clear brush and establish fire lines during wildland fires, the state said. Crews also perform park maintenance and brush clearance for fire prevention at well-known L.A. landmarks, including the Hollywood Bowl, Mt. Wilson and the trails of Angeles National Forest, the state said. The department said Gaxiola's case was referred to the Los Angeles County district attorney "for consideration of escape charges." His recapture occurred two days after authorities apprehended another inmate who walked away from a firefighting camp in El Dorado County in Northern California. Dion Harvey, 24, was similarly discovered missing from his bunk during a camp count Friday night at Growlersburg Conservation Camp, the corrections department said. A search followed, and he was captured Saturday morning. The California Department of Corrections, which has reported other similar cases in recent months, said in a statement on its website that since 1977, "99 percent of all people who have left an adult institution, camp, or in-state contract bed or Community Rehabilitative Program Placement have been apprehended." 1 killed, 32 hospitalized after Mother's Day morning crash involving tour bus on 60 Freeway

A person died and 32 people were hospitalized, including two in critical condition, after a tour bus crash on the 60 Freeway in Hacienda Heights early Sunday morning. According to Los Angeles County Fire Department Public Information Officer Fred Fielding, units were dispatched at 5:07 a.m. regarding a traffic collision involving fire near Hacienda Boulevard and arrived on scene within minutes to find that a tour bus was involved in a crash with a vehicle, believed to be a Nissan SUV. The Nissan was fully engulfed when crews arrived, authorities later stated on social media. One person died in the crash, and it was later confirmed that it was the driver of the Nissan, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle. CHP Officer Zachary Salazar told KTLA 5's Erin Myers at 7 a.m. that, due to the impact of the collision, the Nissan burst into flames, leaving the driver trapped. Salazar elaborated that there were 63 people on the tour bus counting the driver, and a total of 32 were transported to area hospitals in various conditions, including two in critical condition who were among the first to be taken from the scene. The other 31 passengers were uninjured and allowed to leave. The tour bus sustained significant front end damage as well as a shattered windshield and ended up on the shoulder as a result of the collision. A hazardous materials squad was dispatched to the scene to ensure that the bus was not leaking fuel. According to a witness who was driving on the westbound 60 at the time of the crash, the situation unfolded 'so quick' and that 'everyone tried to stop, but there was just not enough time.' The fact that the crash occurred so early on Mother's Day adds to the 'catastrophe,' the witness, a man named Cesar, told Myers an hour after the crash. 'It happened so quickly…a lot of chaos and then just red lights,' he said. 'It's going to be very [catastrophic] especially because it's Mother's Day…it's very sad that it had to start like this.' The westbound 60 Freeway will be closed between Azusa Avenue and Hacienda Boulevard indefinitely, although authorities hope to have some lanes open by 8 a.m. Drivers who need to go through the area are advised to seek alternate routes. One person died and 32 were hospitalized on Mother's Day morning after a fiery crash between a tour bus and an SUV on the 60 Freeway. Flames did not spread to the bus, officials said. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, and 32 people were transported to the hospital, with at least two in critical condition. Three lanes on the westbound 60 freeway west of Azusa Avenue will be closed for an unknown duration as the investigation continues, according to the California Highway Patrol.
