House Republican: Crockett should be censured for Abbott remark

Rep. Nick Langworthy (R-N.Y.) suggested his colleague Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) should be censured for referring to Texas's governor as 'Governor Hot Wheels' during a speech at the Human Rights Campaign's Los Angeles Dinner last week. 'It's absolutely a disgrace. I mean, the fact that she would talk about someone that's got a disability with such a callous, rude tone, she should be ashamed of herself and she should be censured,' Langworthy said Tuesday to independent journalist Nicholas Ballasy. Crockett has faced significant backlash for the remarks about Gov. Greg Abbott (R), who was paralyzed from the waist down in 1984 after being crushed by an oak tree while jogging. 'They have nothing to sell but hate,' Abbott said of Democrats in response to Crockett's comments. Despite criticism, the Texas Democrat has doubled down on her provocative statement. 'I wasn't thinking about the governor's condition—I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable,' Crockett posted on the social platform X on March 25. 'At no point did I mention or allude to his condition. So, I'm even more appalled that the very people who unequivocally support Trump—a man known for racially insensitive nicknames and mocking those with disabilities—are now outraged,' she added. Throughout her tenure in office, Crockett has been known to make headlines with remarks about Republican leaders, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.), President Trump and Elon Musk. She's emerged as a vocal and progressive Democrat who breaks with party leadership. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Rep. Jasmine Crockett facing censure over ‘Hot Wheels' remark against Abbott

(NewsNation) — Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, is facing censure over controversial comments she made about Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott at the Human Rights Campaign's Los Angeles Dinner on Saturday. 'Y'all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there. Come on now,' Crockett said, drawing laughter and applause from the audience. 'And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot a– mess, honey.' Rep. Randy Weber, R-Texas, introduced a resolution Wednesday to censure Crockett, stating she was 'stooping to vile levels of discrimination and despicable political attacks — are nothing short of reprehensible,' adding, 'She must be held accountable for her venomous rhetoric.' Rep. Crockett's 'Hot Wheels' jab at Abbott like school bully: Vittert Crockett asserts that she didn't mock Abbott's use of a wheelchair but instead was referring to the governor's policies of sending migrants to Democratic states. 'I wasn't thinking about the governor's condition—I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable,' Crockett wrote in a post on X. 'Literally, the next line I said was that he was a 'hot a– mess,' referencing his terrible policies.' It's unclear if or when disciplinary action against Crockett will be presented to the House. Abbott, who uses a wheelchair, was paralyzed more than 40 years ago after a tree fell on him. He responded to Crockett's comments, stating, 'It's another day and another disaster by the Democrats.' Signal chat leak: Security experts divided on impact of breach 'The reality is, they have no vision, no policy. They have nothing to sell but hate, and Americans are not buying it,' Abbott said on Fox News Hannity. The measure to censure Crockett comes three weeks after the House voted to censure Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, for his protest during President Donald Trump's address to Congress earlier this month — a disruptive display that prompted his removal from the House chamber. A House censure is a formal reprimand taken by a vote of the House. It is considered a mark on the record of a lawmaker but does not typically carry consequences beyond having the member stand in the well of the House as the resolution detailing their transgressions is read aloud. Crockett calls Texas Gov. Abbott ‘Governor Hot Wheels'

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) is drawing sharp criticism for comments she made about Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott (R) at the Human Rights Campaign's Los Angeles Dinner on Saturday. Crockett began her remarks by calling for those gathered to 'pray for her' because 'who knows what I'mma end up saying.' She then proceeded to speak of the challenges of being a Black woman in America, followed by praising those with intersecting identities such as being Black, female and LGBTQ, before she spoke of the challenges facing Texas. 'Y'all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there. Come on now,' Crockett said, drawing laughter and applause from the audience. 'And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot a– mess, honey.' Abbott, who uses a wheelchair, was paralyzed more than 40 years ago after a tree fell on him. The Texas governor, a strong supporter of President Trump, has faced his own condemnation from Democrats over his stance on issues like gun control, immigration and voting rights. Crockett's comments drew outrage from Republicans. 'Recent polling shows Crazy Crockett as one of the leaders of the Democrat Party. This is who they are,' the National Republican Congressional Committee posted on social media with a clip of Crockett's remarks. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) called Crockett's comments 'disgraceful.' 'Can you imagine if a Republican said something like this?' Coryn posted on X. 'It would be on front page of NYT and all over CNN.' Members of Fox News's 'Outnumbered' panel were not only quick to condemn Crockett's comments but offered their own harsh words about Crockett herself. 'She's trying to demean the governor in order to score cheap political points. She's an attention whore,' said contributor Lisa Kennedy Montgomery. Crockett's office did not immediately respond to The Hill's request for comment. Crockett, who served as a national co-chair for the Harris-Walz presidential campaign, has emerged as a prominent face of the Democratic Party on Capitol Hill, becoming a household name for her viral zingers. In February, the Texas Democrat accused President Trump of acting like a 'thug.' Following Trump's meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House earlier this month, Crockett called Trump 'Putin's ho.' The remarks came just days after Crockett said she would like to tell billionaire Elon Musk to ''f— off.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
