Golfer makes albatross twice on the same hole at well-known Los Angeles golf course
Golfer makes albatross twice on the same hole at well-known Los Angeles golf course Jack Nicklaus made his professional debut at the Los Angeles Open in 1962 at Rancho Park. Arnold Palmer made the 18th hole at Rancho famous a year earlier when he signed for a 12 after pumping four balls OB from the tee. Enter Joel Okmin, who had his own way of making the par-5 closing hole at this venerable city course memorable. In the span of two months, Okmin made an albatross not once but twice on the 18th hole. Getting one in your lifetime is a rarity. Two? That's something not even Okmin, a retired TV producer and writer, could have scripted. The two big birds came on March 19 and May 21. Both times, Okmin drilled his drive and then had a shot from about 170 yards. Both times he used his trusty 7-iron. "I never holed out, really, from more than 100 yards. I've had eagles but most of my eagles are from putting," said Okmin. If you're starting to doubt this story, be assured that there were witnesses. Fellow Rancho Park Senior Golf Club member John Given was there for both, in fact. "The first time he didn't have [an angle], I had an angle where I was certain from the beginning it was one bounce and in," he said. "The second time, you could tell that it bounced and was rolling towards the hole but until we got up to the hole, you couldn't see anything." Those were the first albastrosses that Given had ever witnessed. "I heard what the odds are for an albatross compared to a hole-in-one, and then to get two!" he said. "That's some serious odds." Odds of a hole-in-one are generally accepted to be 12,000-to-1. Odds of an albatross are reportedly about a million-to-one. As far as the albatross vs. double eagle debate, Okmin makes it clear which term he prefers. "Double eagle doesn't make sense to me," he says. "Even though that's the American version and it does sound sexier. If you think of a double eagle, an eagle is 2 under par and double that is 4 under par. So, it makes no sense. If you talk to non-golfers, they don't know what you're talking about. It's way sexier to have a hole-in-one. They don't understand that an albatross is much more difficult."

Tiger Woods arrives at Genesis Invitational with Donald Trump's granddaughter, Kai
Golf fans were unsure whether or not Tiger Woods would make an appearance at Torrey Pines for the Genesis Invitational during the weekend. Woods' mother, Kultida, passed away just three days prior to the tournament entry deadline, and although Woods had originally committed to playing, he eventually pulled out, claiming he was just "not ready." Despite grieving, Woods made it out to the course for the final day of the tournament, arriving in his traditional red polo. Many golfers participating in the tournament were seen wearing red as well, including red pins, in honor of Woods' mother. Woods wasn't alone when he arrived though. Prior to heading to the range, Woods was seen in the parking lot with Donald Trump's granddaughter, Kai Trump. Woods recently played a round of golf with the president, whose granddaughter recently committed to playing golf at the University of Miami. Despite playing in the tournament 16 times throughout his career though, Woods has never won the event. The Los Angeles Riviera Country Club has not been kind to Woods. That said, this year, due to the Palisades wildfires, the event had to be moved to Torrey Pines, where Woods has won eight times in his career, making 2025 the best opportunity for Woods to win the event. Woods, though, was obviously unable to participate. Woods has only finished in the top five at the event three times (1998, 1999, 2003). He finished second or tied for second in 1998 and 1999, while finishing tied for fifth in 2003. The closest Woods came to victory was 1998, when he lost a playoff to Billy Mayfair. The event that year was also not held at the Los Angeles Riviera Country Club, but rather the Valencia Country Club due to the Riviera hosting the U.S. Senior Open around that same time. There are only six PGA Tour events older than the Genesis Invitational
There are only six PGA Tour events older than the Genesis Invitational The Genesis Invitational, one of the longest running tournaments on the PGA Tour schedule, is back for another year. It will be played in 2025 at a new venue, however, as Torrey Pines becomes the 12th golf course to host the event. The tournament is one of three player-hosted signature events on the PGA Tour. Tiger Woods' TGR Live runs the event. It's the ninth year that Genesis is the title sponsor. Before becoming an invitational, the tournament was called the Genesis Open. It started in 1926 as the Los Angeles Open, and the 2025 event will be the 99th playing. The Genesis is the seventh-oldest tournament on the PGA Tour schedule, but if you consider true PGA Tour events and not the majors, the Genesis is the fourth oldest, behind the BMW, Canadian Open and Texas Open. Oldest golf tournaments on the PGA Tour 1860 Open Championship 1895 U.S. Open 1899 BMW Championship 1904 RBC Canadian Open 1916 PGA Championship 1922 Valero Texas Open 1926 Genesis Invitational 1932 WM Phoenix Open 1934 Masters Tournament 1937 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am This year will mark the first time the Genesis will be played outside of the Los Angeles area. Torrey Pines in San Diego is also a long-standing venue on the PGA Tour. It has hosted the the Farmers Insurance Open (which has also had several names over the years) since 1968 as well as the 2008 and 2021 U.S. Opens.

Tiger Woods commits to playing in 2025 Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines
Tiger Woods has committed to play in the 2025 Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines in San Diego. The Genesis Invitational is the only non-major tournament he has played in since he was badly injured in a car crash in February 2021 in Los Angeles. As a professional golfer, Woods has won eight titles at Torrey Pines, including the 2008 U.S. Open. The last time he played at this course was in 2020. Woods, the host of this year's tournament, announced in January that the tournament would be relocated from the Riviera Country Club in the Pacific Palisades due to the wildfires. Riveria was not damaged by the fire but it is located in the nearby community. "While Riviera remains the home of the Genesis Invitational, we look forward to playing on another championship-caliber golf course this year and using the tournament to support those affected by the fires in the Los Angeles area," Woods said. This will be the first time, what previously was called the Los Angeles Open, is not at Riviera since 1998.
