Real Madrid 'accelerate talks' over early Trent Alexander-Arnold transfer as Xabi Alonso aims to get outgoing Liverpool star in for Club World Cup
Liverpool over an early transfer for Trent Alexander-Arnold in the hope that he can play for Los Blancos at this summer's Club World Cup. The Spanish giants are said to be keen for the right back before his contract officially expires on June 30. However, Liverpool are determined to hold out for a fee if the Reds are to release him early, given that he will depart his boyhood side as a free agent. According to a report from The Times on Thursday night, Real's desire to seal Alexander-Arnold's arrival could see a deal completed within the next 24 hours. Xabi Alonso - who replaced Carlo Ancelotti in the Spanish capital following the latter's decision to manage the Brazil national team - wants the 26-year-old in his squad for their first match of the new tournament against Al-Hilal in Miami on June 18. Alexander-Arnold could be allowed to move thanks to the creation of a special transfer window by FIFA from June 1 to June 10 specifically for the Club World Cup. Figures at Real are said to want him to officially be their player before he joins up with the England squad next week ahead of the Three Lions' World Cup qualifier against Andorra and their subsequent friendly with Senegal. That comes after Liverpool rejected an approach from Los Merengues to sign Alexander-Arnold during the January transfer window. The Reds refused to enter into negotiations over Alexander-Arnold leaving early given their focus on the Premier League, which they eventually won at a canter. That was despite a willingness from Real to fork out £20million for his services six months ago. The impending arrival of Alexander-Arnold follows the major coup Real pulled off by announcing Alonso as their new manager. Regarded as one of the most gifted coaches in world football, he has already welcomed defender Dean Huijsen to the club after Real triggered his £50million release clause to see him sign from Bournemouth. Alonso - who played for both Liverpool and Real during a fine career as a central midfielder - will officially assume his new post on June 1. He will sign a three-year contract, which runs until June 2028. The Spaniard had been heavily linked with the club after impressing in his first job in management at Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen. In his first season at the helm in 2023-24, he guided them to the title unbeaten, as they failed to lose a single game. The resulting vacancy at Bayer Leverkusen is reportedly expected to be filled by ex-Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, with the Dutchman having been out of management since he was sacked by the Red Devils in October. He was dismissed earlier this season with Man United lying 14th in the Premier League after winning just four of their opening 14 matches.

Former Real Madrid star Ronaldo Nazário has this weekend provided an insight into his feelings regarding some of his one-time teammates at the club. Frontman Ronaldo for his part spent some of the finest years of his legendary career plying his trade in Real Madrid white. The Brazilian lined out for Los Merengues for a total of five years, between 2002, and 2007. During this time, Ronaldo played alongside some of the game's very best when it comes to talent, from Iker Casillas to Roberto Carlos, David Beckham and Luís Figo. Who, though, does the now-48-year-old consider the best of the bunch? As alluded to above, this weekend, Ronaldo opened up on precisely as much. Speaking during an interview with fellow countryman and ex-Barcelona striker Romário, the former Ballon d'Or winner explained: 'Best player I've played with? At club level, Zidane. Zizou was very different, he had a lot of class, he was very technical, he made everything simple.' Turning attentions towards the worst player whom he shared the pitch with, Ronaldo added: 'Worst player I've ever played with? Gravesen. He was a really nice person, but he was very bad at football.' QUEM SERÁ? 🤣Ronaldo respondeu no De Cara Com O Cara qual pior é o melhor jogador que ele jogou junto… E aí, concorda? 😅Você assiste a entrevista completa no YouTube da RomárioTV. 📺#RomárioTV #Ronaldo▶️: — RomárioTV (@Romariotv_ofc) February 14, 2025 Conor Laird – GSFN
