Atletico Madrid announce extensions for Antoine Griezmann and club captain

Atletico Madrid have announced new deals for veteran duo Antoine Griezmann and Koke Resurreccion. The veteran duo, for many years the face of this Atletico side, have moved into secondary roles of late. There was no shortage of speculation over Griezmann's future in March and April as the Frenchman sat down with Los Rojiblancos for contract talks. Griezmann has been heavily linked with a move to Major League Soccer, where he has voiced a desire to play at the end of his career. Yet on Monday it was announced by Atletico that Griezmann had extended his deal until 2027, in deal Marca say will benefit the club in terms of their salary limit. Their information is that Griezmann will continue to earn €8m (previously his deal was valid until 2026), but that it will be divided between two campaigns. Koke Resurreccion also extends deal Captain Koke also saw his contract extended by a year until 2026, as he looks to continue adding to his record of appearances, currently on 681. The 33-year-old has a rolling contract that him and Atletico can agree to extend at the end of every year. Image via Atletico de Madrid. Difficult season for Griezmann It has undoubtedly been Antoine Griezmann's most difficult season at Atletico since returning to the club from Barcelona. The 34-year-old, Atletico's all-time leading goalscorer with 197 goals, started off his usual brilliant self alongside Julian Alvarez up front. Advertisement Yet by the midpoint of the season, his form started to wane, and Griezmann struggled dreadfully for production in front of goal, eventually losing his spot in the side in the final weeks. The former France international finished with 16 goals and nine assists in his 53 appearances. Different role ahead of Griezmann? It has certainly opened up the question ahead of next season. Julian Alvarez will lead the line for Atletico, and the Club World Cup could be a good indication of where Alexander Sorloth lies in the pecking order, just as much as it will be for Griezmann. Koke has already transitioned to a role as an alternative, option off the bench and dressing room leader, and Griezmann could be on his way to similar.

Arsenal pushing hardest for signature of Atletico Madrid star

Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez has established himself as the star man in their forward line this season, after Los Rojiblancos forked out €75m to sign him from Manchester City, in a deal that could rise to €90m. Less than a year into his time at Atletico though, there are already clubs looking to pry him away. Despite Atletico remaining confident that they can retain Alvarez, multiple reports last week claimed that his representatives would be holding talks with Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Liverpool this week. Barcelona are also interested, albeit for next year, but they are cited as perhaps the one offer that Alvarez would listen to. Arsenal most interested in Julian Alvarez These reports have been confirmed by Marca, who say that Arsenal and Liverpool are interested in a deal this year. Their information is that Arsenal are pushing hardest for his signature, where former Atletico Sporting Director Andrea Berta is operating. The say his salary is €7m per annum plus €1m in bonuses, but Los Colchoneros will not get involved in an auction if a bigger offer comes in. Image via AFP / Bernat Armangue Atletico plans for Alvarez Los Rojiblancos do have plenty working in their favour though. Alvarez is not enthused by the idea of returning to the Premier League, and feels more comfortable in the Spanish capital. On top of that, he is content at the Metropolitano. Atletico also intend to build their side around Alvarez, and will make signings to surround him with talent. Diego Simeone and the club are convinced he is a cornerstone of their future, and one of their primary goals is to keep the Argentine happy. Who best to surround him with? One of the questions Simeone and Director of Football Carlos Bucero will have to answer is who to partner him with. Alvarez and Griezmann looked to be a blossoming partnership, but with the Frenchman struggling for form in the second half of the season, a turnaround will be needed to see him return. Simeone has generally preferred to use Alexander Sorloth off the bench, despite him being the most efficient of their forwards, while they have also been linked with a number of forwards for this summer.

Atletico Madrid crush Girona 4-0 in La Liga

Madrid - Saba: Atletico Madrid concluded the current La Liga season with a crushing 4-0 victory over Girona in their final match of the campaign on Sunday, in the 38th and last round of the Spanish league. Norwegian star Alexander Sørloth continued his brilliant form, opening the scoring for Los Rojiblancos in the 68th minute before adding two more goals in stoppage time to complete a hat-trick. Meanwhile, French defender Clément Lenglet sealed the fourth goal in the 87th minute. Sørloth had already made La Liga history earlier this season by scoring the fastest hat-trick in the competition's history—clocking in at just 10 minutes and 46 seconds—during Atletico's match against his former club Real Sociedad in the 35th round. He also netted a fourth goal in that game. With his latest goals, Sørloth has now raised his tally to 20 goals, placing him fourth in the league's top scorers' list this season. Following this win, Atletico Madrid climbed to 76 points, securing third place in the La Liga standings. Meanwhile, Girona finished 17th in the table with 41 points. Whatsapp Telegram Email Print

Atletico Madrid honing in on summer transfer strategy with three moves planned

While it may not have been talked about in terms of a treble, Atletico Madrid were just as alive in all three major competitions this year in mid-March as Real Madrid or Barcelona. However with varying levels of misfortune, Los Rojiblancos found themselves all but out of the hunt for all three competitions in the space of four games either side of the international break. In some senses, Diego Simeone will be happy with the progress his side has made, and the major shining light this season was the big-money signing of star striker Julian Alvarez. As per Marca, the plan is to find a way of building around him to increase Atletico's possibilities of challenging for trophies. Director of Football Carlos Bucero has over the space of the last year executed a power shift to take over the majority of the responsibility regarding transfers, and has identified three positions he wants to strengthen. Image via Cordon Press Primarily, Atletico want to revamp their entire left side of the pitch, with a new winger and a new left-back. Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman is one of the options they have considered, although it appears he will be too expensive, but one of the priorities is Villarreal's Alex Baena, who has been operating on the left side of a four there under Marcelino Garcia Toral. His release clause is €60m, although there has been a suggestion that the Yellow Submarine would accept less. Advertisement Their other primary goal is to sign Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero, whom they have opened talks with. He is also priced at €70m though, and Atletico's success with these moves will define how they go about addressing the rest of their needs. Bucero is keen on also bringing in a forward, a holding midfielder and a left-back. Javi Galan has struggled to convince this season despite becoming the de facto starter, and Thomas Partey of Arsenal is their preferred midfield target. Even if Baena comes in, a winger similar to Samuel Lino is another priority, with Los Rojiblancos expected to listen to offers for the Brazilian. It looks set to be another chaotic summer at Atletico, with Los Colchoneros spending close to €200m on Conor Gallagher, Robin Le Normand, Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth. While it appeared as if Le Normand and Sorloth were planned as early moves, Gallagher and Alvarez later appeared as market opportunities that came up. If they can bring in a left-back, left winger and a central midfielder, they would certainly look more balanced than they did this season though.

Real Madrid 2-1 Atletico Madrid: Match review

It is advantage Real Madrid in their round of 16 tie versus Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, thanks to a first leg win at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday evening's derby. A tightly fought contest saw Los Merengues come out on top as they earned their maiden success of the season against Los Rojiblancos with the two previous La Liga games between the rivals ending in 1-1 draws. The match got underway with the home team very much in the driving seat from the first whistle. It took them less than four minutes to break the deadlock as a superb through ball from Federico Valverde was latched upon by Rodrygo Goes down the right flank. The Brazilian beat Javi Galan easily before setting himself up and thumping a neat finish past Jan Oblak with his weak foot. The goal broke Rodrygo's scoreless run which had gone on for nine matches. Just minutes later, Antonio Rudiger's long ball was brought down by the winger, who again took on Galan without any issues. He latched hands with Jose Maria Gimenez and tumbled inside the box but a penalty shout left referee Clement Turpin unmoved in what seemed like a 50-50 call on second viewing of the tussle. After an intense seven or eight minutes at the start, Atletico sat deep and began playing on the counter. They had a number of chances which Federico Valverde and Raul Asencio dealt with well and needed a moment of genius from Julian Alvarez to draw level just after the half-hour mark. The forward's second goal against Real Madrid this season was a work of art as he finished brilliantly from a tight angle in the box after beating Eduardo Camavinga in a one-on-one down Atleti's left wing. Following the first half, in which the hosts were probably a bit more passive than they would have liked, the second period saw them gain better control of proceedings and within 10 minutes of the game restarting, Brahim Diaz restored their lead. A quick combination down the left between the Moroccan, Vinicius Junior and Ferland Mendy saw the former Manchester City star drop Gimenez in the box with some neat footwork. A pinpoint finish into the far corner followed as Brahim scored in the round of 16 first leg for the second straight season. Real Madrid looked for a third after going up for a second time on the night but struggled against Atletico's low block, while Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior were unexpectedly poor. And though the visitors broke forward a couple of times, their chances of finding a second equaliser of the evening were repelled by some great defending by the team. Mbappe and Vinicius should have added a third in stoppage time but the Frenchman's pass to his teammate was extremely tame in a two-on-one situation. Marcos Llorente intercepted for Los Rojiblancos, who would have felt that they were let off the hook by two of the world's most lethal hitmen. The decisive leg is on Wednesday, March 12th, at the Wanda Metropolitano and Real Madrid will look to capitalise on their advantage to earn a quarter-final berth in the European Cup. Before the second continental bout, Los Merengues take on Rayo Vallecano at home in La Liga while Diego Simeone's side is on the road against Getafe in the Spanish top-flight.
