Eminem publisher sues Meta, claiming unlicensed use of rapper's songs on Facebook, Instagram
Eminem's song publisher has sued the digital giant Meta, claiming the company behind Facebook and Instagram failed to properly secure licensing for music by the Detroit rapper. The lawsuit, filed Friday by Ferndale's Eight Mile Style in Detroit federal court, contends Meta maintains online music libraries with Eminem songs supplied to the public for user posts. Works include hits such as ''Till I Collapse,' which is among the 243 Eminem compositions administered by Eight Mile Style. Friday's filing says previous outreach from Eight Mile Style to Meta prompted the social media company to remove Eminem tracks such as 'Lose Yourself' from its libraries, although karaoke and instrumental versions of that song remain available, according to the suit. The Eminem music has been deployed 'across millions of videos, which have been viewed billions of times,' reads the complaint. Eminem is not a direct party in the suit. The Free Press has reached out to Meta for comment. Eight Mile Style accuses Meta of several forms of copyright infringement. It is seeking yet-to-be determined monetary damages, based on Meta advertising profits, or statutory copyright damages, along with a permanent injunction against the company's use of the Eminem songs. The lawsuit argues that Meta isn't merely allowing posters to include Eminem music in user-generated content — it is 'actively encouraging' them by featuring the songs in its libraries. Eight Mile Style says the Eminem songs are made available for user posts on Facebook, remixes on Instagram Reels and content on the Meta-owned messaging service WhatsApp. Algorithms directly promote the music to users via 'For You' and 'Trending' categories, the suit claims. The lawsuit alleges that Meta accessed the Eminem songs through a 2020 arrangement with the New York digital licensing firm Audiam, which had previously worked with Eight Mile Style. In this situation, the complaint says, Audiam was not authorized by the Ferndale company to enter into an agreement with Meta for the Eminem music. 'Meta's years-long and ongoing infringement of the Eight Mile Compositions is another case of a trillion (with a 'T') dollar company exploiting the creative efforts of musical artists for the obscene monetary benefit of its executives and shareholders without a license and without regard to the rights of the owners of the intellectual property,' reads the complaint. Eight Mile Style, which was co-founded by Eminem's early production team the Bass Brothers, oversees Eminem's catalog of songs published between 1995 and 2005, including releases up through the album 'Encore.' The Ferndale company has aggressively guarded against copyright infringement through the years, most notably in the digital sphere, including high-profile litigation with Apple and Spotify. Facebook was named in a 2013 lawsuit by Eight Mile Style, which alleged the social media service simulated the Eminem track 'Under the Influence' in an ad spot. That dispute was settled out of court. The new Meta suit contends that Eminem's compositions 'are some of the most valuable in the world, and Eight Mile Style is very protective of these iconic songs.' Eminem's Decades-Old Hit Returns To The Top 10 In America
Eminem's catalog is packed to the brim with hit singles. He has now spent more than a quarter-century churning out smashes — the kind that become huge when they're first released and remain in people's minds for years to come. Among dozens of popular tunes, one stands out as both a critical favorite and a commercial powerhouse. That track, somehow, is still a top 10 seller to this day in America. 'Lose Yourself' can currently be found on two Billboard rankings. It returns to the top 10 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales tally this week, jumping from No. 12 to No. 8. At the same time, the smash reappears on the Rap Digital Song Sales list — which only includes 10 spaces — at No. 6. 'Lose Yourself' only needs to hold on for about two more months on the Rap Digital Song Sales chart before it hits 500 weeks on that list. The track has now earned 467 stays on the more all-encompassing R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales tally. Amazingly, despite its continued popularity and seemingly never ending presence on both rankings, it has never reached No. 1. The highest it has climbed is No. 2 on both rosters, though from time to time it comes close to the summit. At the moment, 'Lose Yourself' is Eminem's only charting hit in the U.S., but he does see one of his other smashes appear on worldwide rankings. 'Without Me' rises on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S., settling at Nos. 166 and 141, respectively. That tune is nearing 200 weeks on both of those tallies. 'Lose Yourself' is a standout from Eminem's discography for several reasons. The track hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 2002 and spent 12 frames atop the tally, making it one of the rapper's most successful compositions on the competitive list. The 8 Mile single also earned him some of the mot prestigious honors possible, as it went on to win both Grammys and the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The tune is tied as Eminem's most-certified by the RIAA, alongside 'Love the Way You Lie,' one of his collaborations with Rihanna. Both tracks have moved 13 million equivalent units in the U.S. alone.

Eminem surprise appearance delights fans at Jelly Roll, Post Malone show
Eminem surprise appearance delights fans at Jelly Roll, Post Malone show Show Caption Hide Caption Eminem joins bid to bring WNBA back to Detroit Rapper Eminem has joined a group of investors in a bid to expand the Women's National Basketball Association in his native city of Detroit. unbranded - Sport Before he wrapped an hourlong set at Detroit's Ford Field, Jelly Roll had one last trick up his sleeve. As he performed a cover of "Lose Yourself" — a favorite of his while visiting the Motor City — the country-rocker glanced to the stage wings. And sure enough, accompanied by a near-deafening roar May 18 inside the sold-out stadium, out strode Eminem. The Detroit-born rapper picked up the second verse of his signature 2002 hit, joining Jelly Roll as the two eventually made their way down the runway for the song's familiar chorus. Eminem becomes grandfather as daughter Hailie Jade welcomes baby boy The "Lose Yourself" moment came at the end of a multigenre medley that featured some Lynyrd Skynyrd, Nickelback, DMX, Miley Cyrus and Wiz Khalifa. It's a longtime feature of Jelly Roll shows, and its savvy, crowd-pleasing blend harks back to another Detroit staple: Kid Rock. But it was Eminem who got to steal the show from everybody, and nobody seemed happier about it than Jelly Roll himself: Pumping his fists, shaking his head in a giddy disbelief, he told fans it had just become "the greatest show" of his life. It was among the highlights of a festive night, which found Post Malone headlining the eighth stop of his latest tour, a lengthy transatlantic outing set to run through September. This is not Eminem's first surprise visit to the stadium. In 2023, the rapper made a similar "Lose Yourself" cameo during an Ed Sheeran concert. Jelly Roll has long been a loud, avowed Eminem fan. The two met for the first time nearly a year ago at the concert celebrating the reopening of Detroit's Michigan Central Station. Post Malone and Jelly Roll are heading on a 'Big' tour: How to get tickets In front of a raucous crowd, Post Malone treated fans to a two-hour set, mingling older hits with a heavy helping of material from "F-1 Trillion," his new chart-topping sojourn into country music. The show brought a high-energy, beer-chugging, Friday-night atmosphere to the Sunday evening affair. Another surprise guest, Dallas rapper BigXThaPlug, appeared in the show's homestretch, emerging for a quick performance of his viral hit "Texas," while Jelly Roll stepped back out to duet with Post Malone on "Losers," a catchy number from the new album.
