French films with English subtitles to watch in March 2025

The cinema club Lost in Frenchlation holds regular screenings of French films with English subtitles, with the aim of allowing French language beginners to appreciate the richness and diversity of French cinema. The films are usually a mixture of new releases and classics. Here's what is coming up in March; Emilia Pérez – Monday, March 3rd What? French director Jacques Audiard's Palme d'Or, Bafta Golden Globe and César-winning movie, which is nominated for 13 Academy Awards, is the feature for a special Lost in Frenchlation Oscar night. It paints an, 'exhilarating half-sung Spanish-language portrait of a former cartel boss's life-changing transformation', according to trade publication, Variety – but it has found itself at the centre of something of a storm of controversy over its subject matter, and the views of its main star Karla Sofía Gascón, after it garnered a near-record number of Oscar nods. When? Arrive for pre-movie drinks from 7pm, screening at 8:30pm. Where? Cinéma du Panthéon, 13 Rue Victor Cousin, 75005 Paris. Tickets? Movie tickets can be bought here. They cost between €10 and €12, with snack options between €3 and €9 extra. Le Système Victoria (The Victoria System) – Friday, March 7th What? To mark International Women's Day, on Saturday, March 8th, Lost in Frenchlation will screen Le Système Victoria – based on Eric Reinhardt's tense novel of sex, power, capitalism and deception – tells the story of a talented and ambitious building contractor who is drawn into the decadent life of an HR professional at a domineering multinational company. When? Join a Women of Paris tour at 5pm, and arrive at the cinema for pre-screening drinks from 7pm, for the screening at 8pm, followed by a Q&A with director Sylvain Desclous. Where? L'Entrepôt, 7 Rue Francis de Pressensé, 75014 Paris. Tickets? Movie tickets can be bought here. They cost between €6 – €9.50. Tickets for the Women of Paris tour, which starts at Place Pigalle, Montmartre, cost €17, and can be ordered here. Jouer avec le Feu (The Quiet Son) – Thursday, March 13th What? Vincent Lindon won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival for his performance as a widowed and doting father of two sons struggling to understand his oldest child's drift towards a far-right ideology in the aftermath of France's May 1968 riots. When? Arrive for pre-movie drinks at 7pm, screening at 8pm, followed by Q&A with the director. Where? Luminor, 20 Rue du Temple, 75004 Paris. Tickets? Movie tickets can be bought here. They cost between €7.50 – €11.50. L'amour Ouf (Beating Hearts) – Sunday, March 16th What? Years after a blossoming romance between a rebellious teenage bad boy and a fearless and sharp schoolmate was ripped apart by rampant gang violence, fate finds a way to bring them back together again. But the former's dark past threatens to destroy their burgeoning love for a second time. When? Arrive for pre-screening drinks at 6pm, screening at 7pm. Where? Luminor, 20 Rue du Temple, 75004 Paris. Tickets? Movie tickets can be bought here. They cost between €7.50 – €11.50. Baisers volés (Stolen Kisses) – Tuesday, March 18th What? A New Wave classic to celebrate a new venue for a Lost in Frenchlation night. François Truffaut's 1968 comedy drama follows Antoine Doinel, hero of his earlier Les Quatre Cents Coups (The 400 Blows), as he tries – and fails – to hold down a civilian job after serving out his national service in military prison. Romance, too, seems too difficult to handle. When? Join a walking tour of Paris, taking in the history of François Truffaut's films at 4.30pm. Arrive for drinks at 6.30pm, screening at 7.30pm. Where? Filmothèque, 9 Rue Champollion, 75005 Paris. Tickets? Movie tickets can be bought here. They cost between €5 – €10. Tickets for the Truffaut tour, which starts at Place St-Georges, cost €18 and are available here. Jane Austen a Gâché ma vie (Jane Austen Wrecked My Life) – Thursday, March 20th What? This year marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of English literary giant Jane Austen. Historically, her works – yes, even Pride and Prejudice – have not translated into the hearts and minds of French readers. This romantic comedy reveals what happens when her works … erm… work. Camille Rutherford stars as a lonely bookseller with literary dreams – until she is invited to be a writer in residence in England. When? Drinks at 7pm, screening at 8pm followed by Q&A with director Laura Piani. Where? L'Arlequin, 76 Rue de Rennes, 75006 Paris. Tickets? Movie tickets can be bought here. When? Join a Midnight in Paris movie tour at 5pm. Followed by drinks at 7pm, screening at 8pm. Where? L'Epée de Bois, 100 Rue Mouffetard, 75006 Paris. Tickets? Movie tickets can be bought here. They cost €5. Tickets for the walking tour at the Danton statue at Boulevard Saint-Germain at 5pm, cost €18 and are available here. God Save the Tuche – Friday, March 28th What? The dysfunctional lottery-winning Tuche clan return for a fifth comedy outing. This time grandson Jiji is selected for a football training camp with English Premiership side Arsenal – which provides the perfect opportunity for the bickering clan to visit England … and, because this is a comedy rather than a documentary; meet Charles III and Queen Camilla. When? Drinks at 7pm, screening at 8pm, preceded by a stand-up comedy show with Elspeth Graty. Tickets? Movie tickets can be bought here. They cost between €15–€17.
