Southern University gets funding for STEM research program

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Southern University A&M College is one of the universities set to get a portion of a multi-million dollar grant to strengthen STEM research. According to a release, the National Science Foundation is giving particular universities across the nation part of a $40-million grant for research capacity and workforce development. Southern University was the only Historically Black College and University (HBCU) that was listed as a recipient of the grant. The grant supports a four-year research initiative, led by the Louisiana Board of Regents, and will focus on key scientific and technological areas, energy, bioscience and environmental solutions. 'Activities will include mentoring programs, graduate scholarships, and K-12 outreach to help build a diverse and competitive research workforce,' according to Southern. Southern University's Dean of the College of Science and Engineering Lealon Martin emphasized the impact of the grant and how it will enhance student success and research training across Louisiana. 'The funded program will enable students in Louisiana to acquire the independent, criticism, and analytical thinking skills needed to drive future technological innovation in the state,' said Martin. 'The Southern University College of Sciences and Engineering is proudly partnering with other STEM institutions around the state to build a framework that will support sustainable pathways for students to capitalize. Acadiana's finalists for Louisiana Student of the Year

() — The finalists for the 2025 Louisiana Students of the Year competition have been named, and Acadiana is well represented on the list. The honorees include one 5th, 8th and 12th grader from Acadiana. Finalists will convene May 16 in Baton Rouge for an awards ceremony and the announcement of the Louisiana Students of the Year winners from each grade. Finalists for 2025 Louisiana Students of the Year from Acadiana are: Grade 5: Anniston Elizabeth Guidry, Teche Elementary School, St. Martin Parish Grade 8: Rylann Renee Viator, Erath Middle School, Vermilion Parish Grade 12: Walker John Prejean, Lafayette High School, Lafayette Parish Students are selected based on criteria that measure academic achievement, leadership skills, character, and service to their schools and communities, officials said. Regional selection committees also use electronic portfolios of accomplishments, along with student writing samples and interviews to assess the communications and critical thinking skills of each candidate. All Louisiana schools were eligible to submit one candidate. Students compete with their peers at the school system level and may advance to the zone and regional competitions. BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Six students from Baton Rouge area schools were named finalists for this year's Louisiana Students of the Year competition. The Louisiana Department of Education said 24 finalists were named statewide. The awards ceremony is set for May 16 at The Cook Hotel and Conference Center in Baton Rouge. Winners will be announced for grades 5, 8 and 12. 'Congratulations to each of our finalists. They represent the very best of Louisiana's young scholars and leaders,' Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley said. 'We are proud to recognize academic excellence and look forward to celebrating with these students, their families, and educators in May.'
