Man Utd won't hold end of season award dinner
Manchester United have decided not to hold an end of year players' awards night for the second season running. United cancelled their plans 12 months ago as the senior men's team finishing eighth in the Premier League, even though they won the FA Cup. This year, the club have opted not to arrange anything. The awards night usually involved prizes for players from across the men's, women's and youth teams. Although the men's side are heading for their worst league finish since the 1973-74 relegation campaign, they could still qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League. As was the case 12 months ago, United's women's team could win the FA Cup. They play Chelsea in the final at Wembley on Sunday. United have already qualified for next season's Women's Champions League thanks to their third-place league finish. United have ruled out a parade if the men's side beat Tottenham in Bilbao on 21 May and instead will host a barbecue at their Carrington training ground the day after the game. Many of the previous awards nights, which have been covered by MUTV, have been memorable, particularly in 2015 when then boss Louis van Gaal delivered an amusing eight-minute speech when he demanded those present: "I want to say something - pay attention to the manager." Bruno Fernandes and Ella Toone won their respective player of the year awards last season. United called on fans to vote for the men's and women's player of the season, and both teams' goals of the season, in the match programme for Sunday's home defeat by West Ham. The awards will be presented on the pitch at Old Trafford before the men's final home game of the season against Aston Villa on 25 May. Speaking after the game, Neville said on Sky Sports: 'He was let go too quickly at United, because if you think about Louis van Gaal, his style is very precise, and Danny wasn't in his game back then so he just let him go. 'But he's actually perfect for how Manchester United should play, threatening space in behind and playing off front players. 'This idea that he's not good enough for Manchester United is absolutely rubbish. He's good enough to be in a pool of three or four strikers. 'He's destroying defences, he's torn Colwill and Chalobah to shreds.' United sanctioned the exit of Welbeck to Arsenal for a fee of £16 million in the summer of 2014. Welbeck has had a fine career and could have been a valuable squad player for the Red Devils. He made 126 appearances for the Gunners, netting 32 goals and recording 13 assists. He has featured 148 times for Brighton, bagging 32 goals and 12 assists. The striker also had similar statistics for United. However, then United head coach Louis van Gaal deemed the centre-forward surplus to requirements. Welbeck was young when he was with the Red Devils and would have demanded a more prominent role. It is difficult for any player to settle for a squad role during the best years of their career. Scott McTominay was in a similar dilemma last summer as he opted to join Napoli. He was a key player at Old Trafford, but it was difficult to see him start regularly, considering the presence of Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes in midfield. Welbeck could still make a surprise return to United. The Red Devils were interested in signing him in the summer of 2023.
